As India moves up the value chain from providing just IT services to building world class IT products, expertise in embedded systems is becoming critical.

Chip design has a wide variety of applications from automobile dashboards to temperature control in aircrafts. Another emerging area is project management in software services and products delivery professionals who can understand both technologies and managing business development.

To cater to this need, SSN School of Advanced Software Engineering (SSNSASE) in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is launching two new masters level programs in Embedded Systems and Software Engineering Management to be launched from July 2006.

"While the demand for embedded systems will grow tomorrow, there is already a need for techno-management professionals," according to Director of SSNSACE , Shashikant Albal. Students enrol in the Institute in July for a month's foundation course and from August to November complete the fall semester, followed by a joint evaluation by SSNSASE and CMU professors.

The learning methodology focuses on `learning by doing' says Professor Alwal. Videoconferences are also arranged with CMU professors during these learning sessions. Stress is also laid on overall development of personality through activities like yoga, photography, leadership skills and communication skills programmes. A six weeks industry internship follows the fall semester, which makes way for another four months' spring semester. May and June are spent in projects. Students then proceed for International Students Orientation at CMU where they finish the Winter Semester from August to mid February.

The entire programme costs US$ 45,000. This includes the tuition fee for the six months at CMU. SSN Education and Charitable Trust runs a scholarship programme where by students can get scholarship up to 100 percent fee waiver based on their performance in the tests.

The entrance test will be an All India test on GRE pattern. This test is followed by an Interview with the SSN professor, followed by a joint interview by SSN and CMU professors.
