Japanese for engineers
Jasmine Hayakawa
S&N Hayakawa Enterprise in West Anna Nagar runs Japanese language courses of various levels to suit the needs of those aiming to go to Japan.
Special courses have been designed for engineering students, particularly for those in streams such as Mechanical Engineering where students work on CAD/CAM/CAE; Electrical and Electronics/Electronics and Communication which involves working on embedded/PLC and Computer Science and Information Technology programmers working in C, C++, JAVA.
Native Japanese teachers tutor students on the basic language skills and Indian teachers teach grammar.
The organisation, set up last year by Jasmine Hayakawa, currently teaches about 120 students from TVS Lakshmi School. Ms. Hayakawa, the managing director, who is from the Fukushima prefecture in northern Japan, came 18 months ago. "This time we have contacted many colleges. I see lots of potential in Indian engineers. Now people are starting to work [in Japan]. They think about what is happening outside, I see that in India's newspapers. Last year, we taught fourth grade children. Now they [the school] want us to teach students up to seventh grade." The organisation plans to reach out to CBSE and Matriculation board students too.
Japanese language involves learning about 1,000 Kanji, Chinese characters commonly used by the Japanese. Candidates who have passed level 2, an intermediate course, are considered proficient in the language. The Japanese Consulate conducts the Japanese Language Proficiency Test and the Japanese Government certifies the qualification, says R. Srinivasan, administrative officer.
The organisation conducts classes for a maximum of 10 students in its premises. Two teachers will soon arrive in Chennai to train engineering students in the college premises in conversational Japanese. If the course is taken from the first year, in three semesters students would have mastered the language and taken the required tests, qualifying them for jobs in Japan, says S.P. Chenthilkumar, director, Business Development.
