SCHOLARSHIP WATCH

Incentives for the girl child

Central Board of Secondary Education, Delhi is inviting Offer of Acceptance from eligible girl students who are the only child of their parents for the following scholarships on the basis of examinations conducted by the Board in 2006.

CBSE Merit Scholarship Scheme is for students joining class XI and XII and amounts to Rs. 500 a month. Candidates who scored over 60 per cent in Class X, CBSE-2006 examinations and currently studying in CBSE-affiliated schools where the tuition fee is not over Rs. 1000 a month are eligible.

Merit scholarship for professional courses is open to rankers in the merit list of AIPMT or AIEEE- 2006 conducted by CBSE and those pursuing professional course in medicine or engineering in any central university or institution controlled or aided by the Central Government. The value of scholarship is Rs.1000 a month and the duration is for four years subject to renewal on year-to-year basis.

The merit scholarship for under-graduate courses is open to candidates scoring over 60 per cent in class XII CBSE - 2006 examinations and pursuing under graduate course ( non-medical / non-engineering ) in any Central or State Government University or one recognized by UGC.

The value of the scholarship is Rs. 500 per month and the duration is for three years subject to renewal on year-to-year basis.

Girls satisfying the criterion may send their duly filled in Offer Of Acceptance along with required documents.

The letter has to reach the office of the Secretary CBSE , Shiksha Kendra, 2, Community Centre, Preet Vihar, Delhi - 92 by July 15, 2006. Offers received in the Board's office within the time frame and complete in all respects will only be considered for award of Scholarships.

The decision of the Board will be final. Details can be had on www.cbse.nic.in.

Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines is offering scholarships for a two-year pre-university course in select junior colleges in Singapore.

Studies commencing in January 2007 will lead to the Singapore - Cambridge General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) or equivalent, an international qualification widely recognised by many countries.

The scholarship will provide maintenance allowance of S $ 2400 per annum with hostel accommodation, setting-in allowance, subsidised medical benefits, school and examination fees, return air economy air passage at the beginning and end of the scholarship term.

There is no bond attached to the scholarship. Candidates can apply for further scholarships to pursue university studies in Singapore or other universities.

Indian nationals, completing Class X in 2006 are eligible. Applicants should possess an outstanding academic track record (at least an average of 85 per cent) with English as first language in State/national examinations.

Short-listed candidates will be invited for selection tests in India in September.

Candidates will then be short-listed for an interview in India in November. Both tests and interviews will be conducted in Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai. The last date applying is July 18, 2006.
