Workshop looks into annotation standards
Language Technologies Research Centre of IIIT organised a two-day national workshop on "Annotation Standards for Indian Languages" where participants discussed a standard set of tags for marking parts of speech in the varied corpora of Indian languages.
Around 20 participants from around the country attended the workshop including researchers, professors, research scholars, annotators, and students.
They represented some of the esteemed institutions like IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, Anna University's KBC Centre, University of Hyderabad, and IIIT Hyderabad that have conducted very significant research in National Language Processing (NLP).
The workshop arrived at an exhaustive standard tag set for annotating Indian languages. The agreed standard not only addresses the uniqueness and diversities of the Indian languages but is easy to use too. The speakers felt that in the current context of NLP, marking linguistic information in the corpora of Indian languages was important to further the technical development of NLP tools for Indian languages.
