Here are some scholarships in the areas of language, technology and management.
Research in modern Indian languages
Eligibility: Master's in linguistics or allied areas with at least 55 per cent marks. Research in any Indian language for two years. Rs. 4,000 per month without NET and Rs. 5,000 per month with NET, plus Rs. 5,000 per annum as contingency grant. Institution: Central Institute of Indian Languages, Manasagangotri, Mysore - 570 006.
Similar scholarships are offered by the Indian Council of Philosophical Research (New Delhi - 110 062), the Indian Council of Historical Research (Ferozeshah Road, New Delhi - 110 001) and the Indian Council of Social Science Research (JNU Institutional Area, New Delhi - 110 067). The terms and conditions are not identical. Each council may be contacted for details. Many of these councils maintain updated websites.
Research assistance for young social scientists
Assistance not exceeding Rs.25, 000 intended to assist young college lecturers and researchers (below the age of 40) working in research institutes
To write a research paper under the guidance of a senior social scientist.
To write a book/monograph based on their past research.
To take up a pilot study under the guidance of a senior social scientist. This assistance is not available for pursuing any degree course, including Ph.D. or for writing a textbook.
Scholarships in IITs
There are various schemes of financial assistance to students in the Indian Institutes of Technology. A couple of these are indicated below.
Ph.D. Programmes in different departments.
Duration: 2 - 5 years for full-time scholars; eligibility: Ph.D. in Engineering subjects - First class M.Tech. or M.Sc. with at least 60 per cent marks and GATE/NET, or B.Tech. subject to certain conditions and GATE.
Ph.D. in Science and Humanities.
Master's degree with 60 per cent marks and GATE / NET; half-time teaching/ research assistantship of Rs.5,000 per month.
Assistanceship for Regular (fulltime) scholars
Ph.D. in Engineering - Rs. 6,000 per month and Ph.D. in Science/ Humanities and Social Sciences - Rs 5,000 per month.
The rates will be enhanced after two years of study.
Scholarships in IIITs
Indian Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore:
It has a number of scholarships endowed by Government, foundations and industry. These include two Sir M Visveswaraiah Scholarships endowed by the Government of Karnataka, six GE Funds Scholarships, two Misys Foundation Scholarships, and three Huawei Scholarships. The scholarship amounts vary from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 3,00,000 per student.

International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad:
Batch-wise scholarships are awarded purely on merit. It is based on performance in individual semesters.
Top five per cent of the class - Rs. 15,000; Next five per cent of the class - Rs. 10,000; Next five per cent of the class - Rs. 5,000; Next five per cent of the class - Rs. 1,000.

Scholarships in IIMs
It is the endeavour of all Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) that "no student be denied the opportunity to pursue the postgraduate programme in management for want of adequate financial resources. Substantial need-based scholarships are available for students belonging to economically disadvantaged families."
For example, students undergoing the two-year PGP, with a family income below Rs. 2 lakh enjoy a full tuition fee waiver.
Company scholarships
There are scholarships sponsored by different companies such as two Aditya Birla Merit Scholarships that cover the full tuition fess, one Hindustan Times scholarship of Rs. 75,000 for first-year students and one Rs. 50,000 for the second- year students, and five Sir Ratan Tata scholarships each amounting to Rs. 50,000 as part of tuition fees in IIM-Calcutta.
In IIM-Bangalore, there is the Uday Naik Memorial Scholarship of Rs.10,000 per month for one year, and the Rotary Foundation Scholarship of Rs.50,000 to a second year PGP student.
IIM-Kozhikode offers six merit scholarships of Rs. 25,000 each for one year, based on academic and extra-academic performance.
The Aditya Birla Group Scholarship covers the academic fees as well as the hostel fees for the duration of the course, commencing with the academic session of the first year.
The value of the scholarship for various institutions is: IIM: Rs. 1,25,000 per annum; IIT / BITS (Pilani): Rs. 65,000 per annum.
Since the scholarship covers the entire course, scholars are entitled to a refund of any amount they may have paid to their institute, prior to the commencement of the scholarship.
All funds are sent directly to the institution. The performance of the scholars is monitored closely for renewal of the award every year.
Eligibility: Gain admission to one of the following institutions:
IIMs: Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata and Lucknow; IITs (B.Tech.): Chennai, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur and Mumbai, and BITS, Pilani
You should be among the top 20 in terms of the entrance examination ranking at the time of admission. Forms are available only through the institution.
Eighty students from the IIMs and 120 students from the IITs and BITS (Pilani) who meet the eligibility criteria are evaluated on the basis of overall achievements, spanning academic and co-curricular excellence.
Those selected for the next round are asked to write an essay. The essays written by these students are evaluated, and those short-listed are interviewed.
The 10 best engineering and the 10 best management students become Aditya Birla Scholars.
