Q & A

REACHING HEIGHTS: For those inspired by the mountains, local adventure clubs can be a starting point. There are also many institutes that offer training in trekking.

I am doing B.Com II year and interested in joining a mountaineering institute of repute. Please tell me about some institutes in India.

You can get in touch with Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi-249193; also Institute of Himalayan Studies and Regional Development, HNB Garhwal University, Srinagar-246174 for details of the type of training you want.

You can get some initial exposure by taking part in trekking and camping expeditions organised by your local adventure club.

I am doing final-year B.Tech Biotech. I am interested in nanotechnology. Please tell me about the prospects of bionanotechnology in USA and India and also about the universities that focus on nanotech research or those which offer it as a major in the U.S.?

Nanotechnology is one of the most emerging fields with lots of opportunities. Bionanotechnology is a multi-disciplinary area involving the exploitation of materials, devices or methodologies in which the critical dimensions of functional components typically lie between molecular lengths and the wavelength of visible light (between ca. 0.1 and 500 nm).

In the context of this priority area, there is also an interest in exploring how Microsystems methods may be used to package nanoscale technologies and provide a functional user interface.

There are many top universities in the U.S. such as Drexel University (School of Biomedical Enginering), and University of Pensylvania, that offer graduate programmes in specialised fields of nanoscale imaging and sensing, nanoscale micro encapsulation, nanoscale skin research, nanotissue engineering, and nanoscale biomechanics, etc.

I am interested in a career related to plastic and polymer technology. Please tell me about placement/positions the CIPET trainees are given.

The Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET) is engaged in development of trained manpower and providing technical service to plastics and allied industries. Its Postgraduate Diploma in Plastic Engineering leads to employment as plastic engineer or production engineer; plastics technologists or executive shift engineer.

After completing the postgraduate diploma in Plastic Processing Technology, you could look for a position as production officer/ process engineer/ shift or production supervisor/ senior process technicians.

Postgraduate Diploma in Plastic Testing & Conversion Technology leads to placement as quality supervisor/ testing engineer/ supervisor/ lab technicians.

After completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Machine Maintenance, you can become a maintenance supervisor/ engineer/ plant maintenance engineer.

The postgraduate Diploma in Plastic Mould Design trains you for work as mould/ die designers engineers/ CAD/ CAM engineers.

The Diploma in Plastics Mould Technology would enable you to secure placement as mould/ die maker CNC machine technicians/ supervisor.

The Diploma in Plastics Mould Making-Technicians can get you placement as mould/ die maker CNC machine technicians/ supervisor.

I am a mechanical engineer working in manufacturing. I want to do MBA in Systems Management. I want to take up management entrance tests starting with CAT. What are the placement prospects for this specialisation?

Systems management has come to the forefront in the last few years with heavy inroads of InfoTech in the workplace. It is designed to develop recognition of the role of information systems in current global corporate strategies, to learn and practise the use of Information Technology for corporate communication, information processing and strategic presentations, etc.

You are exposed to programming languages, data management, networking and communications, operating systems and systems software.

If you make it through CAT then you would be in the line of reckoning for the PGDCM (Post Graduate Diploma in Computer - Aided Management) at IIM-Kolkata. So brush up on the graduation level mathematics to tackle the quantitative aptitude test, followed by group discussion and interview. The projections from this specialisation in the management stream are good.

What are the options for higher education in the U.S. in Astronomy/allied fields?

If you are keen to pursue higher studies in the U.S., among the best options are Astronomy, Planetary Sciences and Space Sciences programmes (graduate/ Ph.D). Astronomy divides into fields such as astrophysics, celestial mechanics and cosmology. Astrophysics is the study of physical nature of stars and galaxies and the universe. A doctoral degree is the usual requirement as most of works tends to relate to research and development. So I would advise you to choose some good university which has good research work in astronomy/ space sciences. Some of the leading universities doing sgood work are:

California Institute of Technology (www.caltech.edu)

Princeton University (NJ) (www.princeton.edu)

Harvard University (MA) (www.deas.harvard.edu)

University of California-Berkeley (www.berkeley.edu)

University of Chicago (www.uchicago.edu)

What is the job of a technical writer?

Technical writers put scientific and technical information in easily understandable language for non-technical audience. They prepare operating and maintenance manuals, catalogues, parts lists, assembly instructions, sales promotion materials and project proposals.

They also plan and edit technical reports and oversee preparation of illustrations, photographs, diagrams, and charts.

Technical writers have a wide variety of jobs and they could be working on a wide variety of projects. They may be designing web pages, developing multimedia presentations, creating and/or editing articles, brochures ad copy and direct mail pieces.

They get to write creatively while helping people. The ability to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously helps.
