Colourful programmes mark Nalanda's freshers day



BUSY TIME: Students exchanging notes on their college campus

A colourful function marked the `freshers' day' organised by Nalanda Degree College recently. Decked in their best, the students participated enthusiastically in cultural programmes.

Addressing the inaugural function, ACP Sm. Vali said that students should not cross their limits in the name of ragging.

"To a certain extent, it will serve to strengthen friendship. If students go beyond a point, it will lead to problems," he added. Executive council member of Acharya Nagarjuna University Naraharisetti Srihari said that students should cultivate the motto of service from college days itself.

Seminar on biotechnology

The botany and biotechnology departments of Andhra Loyola College organised a national seminar on `Conservation of biodiversity and application of biotechnology' recently.

Vice-Chancellor of Acharya Nagarjuna University V. Balamohandas said that evolution was a long-drawn process and was very complex with millions of plant varieties.

He stressed the need for protecting the biodiversity with the help of advanced biotechnology.

`Source of inspiration'

S.D.M. Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala organised Quit India Day celebrations recently. Speaking as chief guest, Samvidha Vidyapeeth principal P.M. Krishna Rao said that the freedom fighters were still a source of inspiration to the younger generations.

He recalled the courage of great leaders who were arrested and jailed during the struggle.

Diabetic awareness camp held

Kakaraparti Bhavanarayana College, sponsored by S.K.P.V.V.H. High School Committee, organised a coordination committee meeting recently.

Speaking as chief guest, West Circle CI S. Ramesh Babu said that the students should strive hard to achieve greater goals. Only when the students set nobler objectives, they would be able to reach their targets in life, he added. College secretary and correspondent Tunuguntla Srinivas and others spoke. The college also

organised a conference on `diabetes' recently to create awareness among the faculty members, students and others. Speaking as chief guest, Dr. K. Venugopala Reddy said that India accounted for the largest number of diabetic patients in the world. Lack of exercise, irregular food habits were cited as the main reasons. Principal A.V.S. Prasada Rao and others spoke.

Seminar on Solid

waste disposal

The RVR&JC Engineering College in Guntur organised a two-day national seminar on Solid Waste management in Chemical industries on Friday and Saturday at which speakers wanted people to actively participate in the protection of environment without looking at the Government to do everything.

Banning of plastic bags was no solution to stop environment pollution, but an incentive needs to be given to the people for collecting them at a place for recycling as that is the most effective way dealing with pollution, opined renowned chemical engineering professor G.D. Yadav.

Pollution due to chemicals was only 3 per cent compared to 70 per cent due to power producing industries and ever expanding vehicular population. The Chemical Engineering Department Head M. Venkateswara Rao was the coordinator.

Degree admissions

The Acharya Nagarjuna University has set August 31 as deadline for admission into various colleges affiliated to the university. The Deputy Registrar, Admissions, in a release said that transfer of students from one college to other also must be completed by that date, he said. Fresh admissions and transfers would not be entertained after August 31, he added.

Nagarjuna Society's gesture

The Nagarjuna Education Society, which runs several professional colleges in Guntur, has donated Rs.5 lakhs for the construction of Sports Hostel on Acharya Nagarjuna University campus. Responding to a request made by university Vice-Chancellor V. Balamohandas for generous donations to complete the Rs.6.89-crore Sports Hotel project, the society at its managing committee meeting on Friday decided to donate Rs.5 laksh on behalf of RVR&JC Engineering College, JKC College and College of Education and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The Vice-Chancellor received the cheque from society president K. Basavapunnaiah.
