OFF-BEAT COURSE: Brunel University, West London, offers a programme in motor sports engineering.
My son who is in Class X wants to take up Earth Sciences for his undergraduation. What are the subjects he needs to do at the school level other than Maths, Physics and Chemistry? Which universities offer this course in India and abroad?
The term Earth Science is used to describe all sciences concerned with the origin, evolution, structure and the behaviour of the Earth and its place in the universe, especially in the solar system. The study of earth sciences may be grouped into five major categories:
Earth Sciences encompasses the scientific study of the Earth, its origin, its structure and its composition. It includes:
The dynamic processes that have governed Earth history
The forces that create mountains, rivers and deserts
The causes of earthquakes and volcanoes
The location of oil, gas and minerals
The environment and its management.
In India, we do not have many institutes offering undergraduate programmes in earth sciences. But for postgraduation, we have institutions such as Barkatullah University (Bhopal, Indian School of Mines (Dhanbad) - M.Sc.(Tech) of three-year duration in applied geology and applied geophysics, and Jiwaji University (Gwalior), Manipur University (Imphal), Sambalpur University (Sambalput), and Swamy Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University (Nanded). The Indian School of Mines, which enjoys a deemed university status is the premiere educational and research centre in Earth Sciences.
I am doing final-year plant biotechnology. I want to do M.Sc. Bioinformatics. Please let me know about the career in bioinformatics and also institutes that offer M.Sc Bioinformatics in Chennai.
Bioinformatics essentially involves data banking, management and analysis. The large amount of research involved in biotechnology also includes management of the data that is generated as a byproduct of the research. This is the convergence of life science and computing technology aimed at development of techniques for sorting, extracting, organising, interpreting and utilising the bio information generated. Career opportunities are available in companies specialising in bioinformatics such as pharmaceutical labs engaged in drugs and drug recoveries, industrial and experimental studies of crop and livestock, computing concerns specialising in bioinformatics hardware and software, academic research groups and government departments like patent offices.
M.Sc. Bioinformatics is offered in Chennai at the following institutes: Alpha Arts and Science College, Hindustan College of Arts & Science, Jaya College of Arts and Science, Mohammed Sathak College of Arts & Science, Prof. Dhanapalan College for Women, S.R.M. Arts and Science College, Vel Sri Ranga Sanku College of Arts & Science and Vel's College of Science.
