Seven steps to get a job

Academics, personality and presentation skills matter equally during the interview

Vati Consulting Pvt. Ltd. has come out with a ready reckoner which could help freshers to emerge successful at interviews for jobs in top Indian IT firms.
The recently published survey on `Why freshers choose BPO companies over other firms in the industry', suggests seven basic steps a candidate should follow to clinch a job.
A candidate, when interviewed, must be able to project all his/her skills in that brief encounter."
Emphasise on Project Work: Firstly, to get into the right company, a job aspirant should a grasp of the industry. The best way to exhibit his/her practical knowledge is explaining succinctly the project work undertaken.
Presentation: Project work done should be divided into three parts: `what', `how' and `how well done'. It should say what was intended to be achieved, how it was done and what was the differentiating factor which made the project unique.
Good Communication Skills: According to Das, "The candidate need not have won debate competitions at college, but clarity and organisation of thought will give an idea of his/her thought process and analytic skills to the interviewer.
Personality Factor: The candidate should project himself/herself as a positive, optimistic and assertive person. In case of a wrong response, he/she should accept it and not try to hide it or be casual.
Any additional attributes such as leadership qualities can be highlighted separately. "If he/she has lead a group or project, it should be highlighted separately as it would talk volumes about confidence or team building."
Dress Code: Though a lot has been said about casual dressing in the IT industry, dress code also plays a big role in presentation.
The smart thing is to wear formals during interviews, as casuals are linked to sloppiness.
Crisp CV: The resume should be crisp, brief and factual and highlight skill sets. Students try to present too much information, and are finally not able to put it across. This is where around 80 to 90 per cent of the candidates fumble.
Nowadays consultants do not have time for upgrading candidate's presentation skills.
Do some preparation before attending the interview and be flexible.
This would help you to scale greater heights, concluded Das.
