GAME FOR IT?: Help and guidance for those preparing for GRE is now possible via cellphone technology.

The cellphone revolution continues to surprise even those initiated deep into this hand-held technology-enabler and communicator.

A Chennai-based company that began training those who wanted to write the GRE (Graduate Record Examination), required to enter any (post) graduate school in the United States, is now convinced of the experiment.

"This is not a fancy gimmick. Now we are convincing people that the mobile sets (JAVA-powered and GPRS-enabled) can be a learning tool. The modules that we have created to meet different learners' needs are able to simulate a normal learning environment," says Anand Kannan, managing director of Valued Epistemics, the company behind Wisdom.in. "You can plan and pace your lessons to suit your need and still get constant help and guidance from experts to sharpen your skills steadily," he adds.

Dr. Kannan says: good learning requires high quality lessons or content; an opportunity to revise; constant interaction with experts, systematic evaluation/assessment and feedback and making course corrections or correct learning behaviour; and peer-to-peer interaction.

The Wisdom.in programme works in a model where the student is enrolled and given a unique ID and login number. Once this is done, the student receives lesson modules in an interactive format on his/her mobile phone; the students' response, learning behaviour and pattern is measured constantly at the backend. A student facilitator is available to guide the student and clarify doubts as he/she progresses. The company offers two programmes:

Verbal Master, a 60-session programme that covers vocabulary, reading-comprehension, personalised and detailed evaluation. Fee Rs.3,000

The second offer is a complete GRE programme that comprises 110 sessions covering almost all parts of the entrance examination (cost Rs. 6,000). The admitted candidates get a free online version of the same programme.
