GOOD OPTION: Studying sericulture is an option for zoology graduates.
There are several higher-study options for meritorious graduates in zoology at the postgraduate level such as biotechnology, bioinformatics, medicine, pharmacy, veterinary science, biochemistry, microbiology, environmental science, environment management, forestry, marine studies, human genetics, wild life science, sericulture technology, phytomedical science and technology, forestry management, industrial fisheries, marine biology, oceanography and coastal area studies, anatomy/ medical anatomy, animal biotechnology, coastal aquaculture, and marine food technology.
Teaching and management studies are other general options. You can choose any one of these according to your aptitude and interest.
To become a zoologist, you can opt for zoology for M.Sc. and Ph.D. Final-year M.Sc. students and those who have passed M.Sc. Zoology with minimum 55 per cent marks (SC/ST students require only 50 per cent marks) are eligible to appear for the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted jointly by the CSIR-UGC for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and lectureship. Those who qualify in the lectureship examination will be eligible for recruitment as lecturers in colleges/ university departments and those who qualify in the JRF test will be eligible to pursue Ph.D. programmes with fellowship/scholarship. Age limit for JRF (NET) is 28 years and there is no upper age limit for lectureship.
Biotech option
Biotechnology at master's degree level is one of the options for zoology graduates with above 55 per cent marks. After scoring high marks in M.Sc., try to go for research leading to Ph.D. You can choose or specialise in animal biotechnology or plant science or tissue culture field at the PG/ Ph.D. level. Jawaharlal Nehru University holds a combined entrance test annually for admission to M.Sc. Biotechnology/ M.Sc. Agri biotechnology/ M.VSc. Biotechnology/ M.Tech. Biotechnology programmes offered by several participating universities/ institutes. Meritorious zoology graduates can pursue M.Sc. Biotechnology. After successful completion of M.Sc. Biotechnology, you can go for M.Tech. Biotechnology through the combined biotechnology entrance examination. Some of the departments/ universities/ colleges that offer M.Sc. Biotechnology /Ph.D. courses:
