THE LINK: `ITians club' being inaugurated at Yadava College in Madurai.
A web site, maduraiitians.com, was launched at Yadava College recently. The site aims to unite all the IT people of south Tamil Nadu. P. Maruthamuthu, Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University, addressed the students.
In keeping with the concept of linking IT people, the Department of Information Technology formed an IT club called the `ITians Club.' The club was formally inaugurated recently. P. Rengan, Principal in-charge, installed the office-bearers and `whITe revolution,' a campaign to spread awareness was also launched by R. Gopal, Director.
The club will organise seminars, workshops, aptitude tests and other programmes.Prof. Rengan stressed the importance of soft skills for better employability. Prof. Gopal insisted on the need for logical and analytical thinking and continuous updating of IT facts. S.P. Kabilan, head of the department, said that a true ITian should keep himself well informed about the latest in the field. S. Sankaranarayanan and L. Rajalakshmi took oath as president and secretary of the club respectively.

As part of their outreach programme, the science departments of Fatima College organised a science exhibition at Visalakshi Mills High School in Madurai recently. The Department of Mathematics displayed a variety of models on basic concepts of geometry, and inter-relations between various geometric shapes were also enumerated.
To demonstrate some of the basic principles in Physics and to kindle interest in fundamental sciences, students of the Department of Physics conducted experiments in optics, electromagnetism, electronics and solar energy.
The Department of Chemistry exhibited chemical garden, cool chemical volcano, preparation of clove oil, invisible writing ink and hazards of food adulterants. Models on environmental pollution added colour to the exhibition.
The Department of Zoology displayed specimens of human heart, DNA and human embryo with students demonstrating vividly their respective functions. Live specimens of vipers and silkworms added life to the stall.
The use of technology in plant science was highlighted in the exhibits from Department of Botany.
The Department of Home Science presented exhibits on different aspects of nutrition and dietics. A food pyramid was formed using cereals, pulses, milk and milk products, vegetables, fruits and flesh foods.

The Department of Economics of Lady Doak College has been upgraded as a research centre, the inauguration function of which was held recently.
Paul Appasamy, Director, Centre for Excellence in Environmental Economics, Madras School of Economics, who was the chief guest, gave a presentation of the development of Tamil Nadu and highlighted its strengths and weaknesses. He also suggested that the department could prepare a profile of Madurai district covering all economic aspects.
Pointing out that Economics was a renowned course, he said that options and opportunities available to Economics graduates were immense. In metropolitan cities like Mumbai and Delhi, entrance tests were conducted to admit students in the stream.
He regretted that undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Economics were presently denigrated in Tamil Nadu. In the present context, he predicted that employment opportunities for Economics students would become manifold in Madurai.
The Principal, Nirmala Jeyaraj, urged the faculty members and students to focus their research activities towards important issues and generate solutions to economic problems.

Madurai Kamaraj University quiz team won the first prize in the inter-university quiz contest held recently at SRM University, Chennai.
The varsity was represented by T. Ramkumar and K. Anesh Ramadhas.

Microsoft Corporation and Thiagarajar College of Engineering jointly organised a two-day workshop on `Evolution of computing towards .NET 3.0 and allied technologies' on the college premises recently.
On the first day, Sarang Datye of Microsoft dealt with the evolution of computing trends towards the .NET technology stack. The second day was a hands-on lab session on ASP.NET. Nirmalan and Jebakumar, Microsoft Student Partner at the college, coordinated the event.Mr. Sarang spoke about the Microsoft Student Partner Programme, which is aimed at identifying students, who are passionate about Microsoft technologies and about taking their passion to the student and professional communities in Madurai. M. Vijaylakshmi, Student Branch Coordinator, Computer Society of India, inaugurated the workshop. The keynote address was given by B. Padmashree, Manager of MaduraiDotNet User Group.
