How is the word `sic' used?

(M. Dilip, Mysore)

The word is pronounced like the word `sick' and it means `so, thus'. This Latin word is usually written within brackets after a quote. By putting the word `sic' within brackets, what you are telling the reader is that you are aware there is an error in what you have written; this error is not yours, but the original writer's. You are merely informing the reader that you are being faithful to the original source.

*The young soldiers were unable to cope up (sic) with the pressure.
