Q & A
Complete the backlog first
— Photo: V. Sreenivasa Murthy
MAIN TASK: Complete the examination and get on with life.
I have about an year’s experience in IT recruitment with corporate experience of five months. I want to don the role of a HR Generalist and not get into the dynamics of recruitment. I have applied through the job portals; however, I get a call only for recruitment vacancies. Should I go in for a certification in HR? How should I apply for a Generalist role?

Experience is the mother of all education. You have been in the corporate world and have been identified for your ability to get to the nuances of recruitment. Recruitment is an integral part of Human Resources, which includes training, compensation and benefits, rewards and recognitions, performance management, talent management, talent engagement and talent transformation.
Besides applying through portals, you should contact manpower consultants who will help you to start as a HR Generalist. You should also show an inclination to work in areas other than Recruitment.
A qualification in Human Resources always helps to advance your career. You should probe the idea of pursuing the Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM) specialising in Human Resources, a two-year programme by distance mode from the Symbiosis Centre for Distance Learning (SCDL) ( www.scdl.net).
The National Institute of Personnel Management (NIPM) (45, Jhowtala Road, I Floor, Kolkata-700 019) also offers the Post-Graduate Diploma in Personnel Management (Human Resources), which can be pursued by distance mode.
If you want to attend a management-oriented programme on a regular basis and still continue the corporate pursuits, you should contact the Mount Carmel Institute of Management (MCIM), Palace Road, Vasanthnagar, Bangalore which offers evening courses.
Course or college?
I have completed II PUC with good marks and have secured rank no. 2932 in CET. Should I select a good college and compromise on the course or select a college and get the course of my choice (Electronics and Communications)?

From your mail, it is clear that you have decided to select Electronics and Communications as a faculty of choice and not by chance. You have a good rank, and we are sure that you will walk into an institution of choice.
It is clear that you will do well in any institution. Keep in mind the facilities offered before choosing your institution. Your drive towards understanding the subject in a proactive manner will help you in your objectives.

I am writing this mail on behalf of my friend who is in second year Electronics and Communication Engineering. She has backlog for two years and is not really interested in pursuing her education further. She is interested in Software Testing and would like to take up the certification programmes. . At this juncture she is confused and none of us can support her. Please help my friend.

Failure and success go hand in hand. In order to become a Software Testing professional, one has to go through the grind and prove one’s worth.
By discontinuing the engineering programme, she will be doing a lot of injustice to her career, even before it has taken off. Hence, it is pertinent that without losing time, she should accomplish the task of completing the backlog papers and move on with life.
By progressing through the programme of study she will be able to move up the ladder and accrue the benefits. Before taking to the Testing profile a graduation will keep her in good stead. Dropping out at this juncture will lead her to a situation of no return.
Agri-business
I am studying in the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore. On completion of the course I would like to join a correspondence course in agri-business management and related areas. Please provide information on this aspect so that I can further my career.

Being an agricultural scientist, you should pursue the agri-business and related areas of study on a regular mode, for it will help you in your placement as well.
The area of study has not yet developed through the distance mode.
The two programmes mentioned below are conducted on campus.
Pursuing these from IIMA and IRMA would help you juxtapose the hardcore agricultural scientist in you with the dynamics of business and the corporate world and help shape a career of your choice.
Post-Graduate Programme in Agri-Business Management (PGP-ABM), Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) ( www.iimahd.ernet.in) offers specialisation in Agri-Business Management for students interested in rural and agricultural management.
Institute of Rural Management (IRMA), Anand offers Post-Graduate programmes in Rural Management (PGDRM), and Development. Placements are good in both these institutes.
The boom in agriculture would help you to plan a career not by chance but by choice.
