The Department of Agricultural Economics, Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai, organised a one-day training programme on ‘Intellectual property rights’ on the college premises on Thursday.

K. Ramamoorthy, Dean, spoke on the importance of patenting of inventions by agricultural scientists. P. Paramasivam, Professor and Head, Department of Agricultural Economics, spoke on ‘WTO and its implications on agriculture.’

T. Alagumani, Professor of Agricultural Economics, explained the Sui Generis System for Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Right Act to the participants. C.R. Anandhakumar, Head, Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai, detailed on ‘Geographical indications and registration for patent of inventions.’

S. Mohan, Professor of Agricultural Entomology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, made a comprehensive presentation on the procedures to obtain a patent and its commercialisation and donated a TNAU stored grain insect management kit to Agricultural College and Research Institute for educational purposes. The Ministry of Human Resource Development sponsored the training programme.

E-Content development was a revolution in teaching and learning process and every educational institution must initiate the programme that would strengthen and update knowledge of both teachers and students, said P. Maruthamuthu, Vice-Chancellor, Madurai Kamaraj University. He was addressing the gathering after inaugurating an ‘e-Content development programme’ at Lady Doak College organised from June 18 to 22.

The college had organised the orientation programme in collaboration with Consortium For Educational Communication, New Delhi, an inter-university centre of University Grants Commission on Electronic Media and EMRC of Madurai Kamaraj University.

Addressing the programme, resource person Rajendra Mishra, Research Scientist, CEC, New Delhi, said that with e-content development, one could provide technology but content had be got only through teacher. Abhay Lal, another resource person, highlighted how e-content development could be used to make classes more interesting. The Principal, Nirmala Jeyaraj, and the Vice-Principal, Kalaneethy Christopher, spoke.

Customer Care has become one of the essential components of any marketing activity. It is evident with the emerging opportunities in the sector. One such opportunity was given to students from various colleges at a joint recruitment programme by Eureka Forbes at KLN College of Engineering.

Eureka Forbes organised a joint recruitment programme at the college for the post of ‘Customer Care Specialist.’ A total of 100 students from KLN College of Engineering, KLN College of Information Technology, MAVMM Engineering College, Sowdambika Engineering College and Thiagarajar College of Engineering participated.

Twenty-nine students were selected for various placements with a monthly salary ranging from Rs.15,000 to Rs.20,000. Appointment orders were issued on the spot with a promise that they would be given incentives as per their performances.

Young graduates who have an inclination and interest in this job platform could thrive well and reach higher position in a short period, said Ragavendran and Thomas, HR Managers, Eureka Forbes, Chennai.
