THE ROAD AHEAD: E-age law students gearing up for the future.

Continuing with its initiative to introduce five-year integrated courses to turn out professionals with in-depth knowledge, the University of Mysore has introduced a programme leading to a degree in Law, in a bid to enhance the quality of legal education in Karnataka.

To be modelled after the education provided by the National Law School of India University, Bangalore, the new course leading to B.A.LLB (Honours) will commence from the academic year 2007-08 and admission will be through an entrance examination which will be conducted around the third week of July in Mysore.

The integrated courses are already in vogue in many institutes but are not very popular as the decision to opt for a legal profession is rarely made by students at the Plus Two level. But the University of Mysore is confident of tapping the best in class given its reputation as a trailblazer in ushering in innovations and the impending Central University status due to it.

New look

As C. Basavaraj, Director, School of Justice, Law Department, University of Mysore, explained: The course content may be similar elsewhere but the new course to be introduced by the University will be different as students will be exposed to multi-dimensional aspects of the legal profession apart from receiving a broad-based education comprising history, political science, and economics.

In addition to the existing syllabus, the University will lay special emphasis on emerging concepts such as Intellectual Property Rights, corporate laws and environmental law. Students will also be fully trained in alternative dispute resolution which is becoming popular given the high rate of pendency in courts and focus will be on arbitration and reconciliation.

Stress will be on the employability of students by training them in the practical aspects as also on research methodologies. Students will be thoroughly trained in drafting of instruments relevant to the corporate world, according to Abhyunday A. Anand, who is a research scholar in the field of Law.

Soft skills

The course content and the practical training will focus on the requirements not only of the corporate sector but also on those opting for self-employment by taking up full-time legal practice. Students will be given intensive training in communication skills and personality development which are two major aspects crucial for success in this field but is least addressed in the conventional institutes offering law courses.

The University, which already offers a two-year postgraduate degree in law leading to LLM, will tap its existing staff strength, all of whom are Ph.D holders, apart from roping in resource persons from the NSLUI, leading practitioners of law and guest lecturers from the members of the legal fraternity in the High Court and Supreme Court, said Mr. Basavaraju.

Also on the anvil are tie-ups with leading international Universities for exchange programmes that will expose the students to the latest trends and concepts emerging in the legal profession in the changing world. This is imperative for the new breed of legal professionals who have to handle issues related to IPRs in the globalised world.

In view of the fluidity in the field and rapid changes, the University has the option to revise and constantly upgrade or introduce new courses to meet the changing trends and requirements. Since the course is being introduced from this year, the entrance examination will be held only in Mysore. But in the subsequent years, it will be a State-wide affair. For details contact Mr.C.
