Step into a high-tech discipline
Photonics is a high-tech subject that evolved as a result of the fusion of optical technology with electronics. The discipline has made its impact in areas such as communication, computing and control as well as in other fields such as medicine, photonics industry, defence and entertainment.
Photonics courses are very rare. The Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) is one of the few universities in the country offering a five-year Integrated M.Sc. course in Photonics.
As an emerging area, photonics has good job potential. Those who have passed Plus-Two/ equivalent examination with 50 per cent marks in mathematics, physics and chemistry put together and have scored minimum 50 per cent marks in mathematics are eligible for admission. Selection is through the common admission test conducted by CUSAT.

Those who have a B.Sc. degree with physics or chemistry at the major level are eligible for admission. This multidisciplinary course covers photonics, bio-molecular, molecular biology of the cell, biological chemistry, spectroscopy, photochemistry, bio-photonics, bio-imaging, crystal growth, semi conductors and devices, optoelectronics, optics, fibre-optics, photonic materials, lasers, laser material processing, medical application of lasers, hands-on training on lasers and instrumentations, etc (website: www.unom.ac.in).
The Department of Opto Electronics, under the University of Kerala, Kariavattom, Thiruvananthapuram - 695581, offers opportunities to study M.Tech. Opto Electronics and laser technology.
