Madurai college offers PG in bio-resources management
A new postgraduate course in Bio-Resources Management was launched at Thiagarajar College in Madurai with course inputs from botany, zoology and mathematics departments. The new M.Sc. course was introduced from this academic year with financial support from the University Grants Commission that sanctioned Rs. 27 lakh for the institution.
According to R. Raja Govindasamy, principal in-charge, the course is an innovative programme in an emerging area. The course includes specialised application-oriented papers such as ecoinformatics, ecological modelling, remote sensing, etc., are included in the syllabus. Prof. Raja Govindasamy says the syllabus was framed in such a way that the students pursuing this M.Sc. course will be linked to flourishing areas like information technology and biotechnology for sustainable utilisation of bioresources.
The course deals with resources of plant, animal and microbial origin, their potential application in biotechnological industries and bioinformatics centres, among other things.
Students qualified in botany, zoology, environmental sciences, microbiology, biochemistry, biotechnology and marine biology are eligible for admission.
