More career avenues as health sector opens up

It is that time of the year when students discuss, debate, explore and decide on which course to pursue.

For those in Coimbatore, a whole new set of career options have opened up with the growth of the heath care sector. In an effort coordinated by the local centre of the Confederation of Indian Industry, some of the hospitals in the Coimbatore region wi ll collaborate with the Bharathiar University to offer programmes in the field of health care.

Coimbatore zone, which encompasses Coimbatore, Erode, Salem and the Nilgiris Districts, has about 750 hospitals, 400 medical diagnostic laboratories and almost 10,000 medical practitioners. The sector is growing at about 30 per cent here and with this growth has come several opportunities.

Some of the areas of employment potential are: biochemist, psychiatric counsellor, hospital catering executive, laboratory manager, hospital store executive, immunologist, special department technicians and hospital maintenance executive. Though some colleges here offered courses related to the sector and salary levels are going up, shortage of manpower is a major problem faced by the sector here. Hence, about 20 courses will be offered by more than 10 hospitals from this academic year. The syllabi will be finalised by experts and faculty of the university.

The hospitals that will offer the programme will be identified depending on their capability and resources. “Capacity building is an essential exercise now and we have to do a lot to have adequate quality manpower,” says Dr. K.S. Ramalingam, convenor of the healthcare panel of the confederation.
