Executives who are just out of their teens

SURESH BHAT

The graduates of ICFAI Business School in Bijapur bag plum postings in corporate houses

GOOD BEGINNING: The first-batch students of ICFAI National College, Bijapur, at a farewell meet.

“Even in my wildest dream, I hadn’t thought of becoming an executive at the age of 23, that too in a top corporate house of the country, when I attained a conventional degree two years ago.” That was what Sangu Chavan, who has now joined as Marketing Executive in Reliance Communications at its Bangalore office, said at a recent farewell meet of the ICFAI National College, Bijapur.

He passed out with a B.A. degree in 2005, and was in a dilemma whether to enrol for a conventional postgraduate course such as M.A. or to search for a job as the chances of getting into any of IIMs through an all-India entrance test were remote. It was then the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India (ICFAI), a Hyderabad-based educational institution, opened its branch in Bijapur, offering postgraduate course in Business Administration.

He faced a dilemma again because he hardly knew the antecedents of the institution. Another reason for his hesitancy was the high fees — over Rs. 2.2 lakh — needed to complete the two-year course. He was not sure whether the degree, for which he was going to pay heavily, would fetch him a good job or not. However, after much dillydallying, he joined the college. “It was the turning point of my career.”

Ready assignments

It is also the story of his classmates, who have been absorbed by different companies. According to Iranna Pusthale, the principal of the college, all the 30 students of the first batch got placement orders even before their results were out.

Except four, who refused job offers for family business and matrimonial reasons, all joined their assignments.

Cent per cent placement for maiden batch candidates is surely something to celebrate, and it is the true evaluation of any business school.

Students from the college secured first and sixth ranks in the annual examination conducted for ICFAI business schools across the county.

It increased the demand for admissions to the MBA course here this year.

Even the students with an average score can get into the college but they cannot buy an MBA degree.

Vigorous coaching

They have to go under vigorous coaching. There would not be any compromise in evaluation of papers that would be done under the supervision of ICFAI University of Dehradun, Uttarkhand, the Principal said.

Corporate houses appoint management students not merely on the basis of their academic record but through true evaluation of their ability to make critical decisions, communication skills, body language, getting the work done in hostile conditions, positive attitude, leadership quality, tendency to rise up to the situation and so on.

The fee structure is not on the higher side compared to that of business schools in bigger cities. The quality of teaching and exposure the students get here is no less than that of any reputed institution, claims Mr. Pusthale.

Though not housed in a spacious campus, the college has adequate facilities such as LCD displays, individual laptops, projectors, airconditioned computer lab and online library.

Group discussions, team work, marketing, project works, mock interviews, and evaluation are regular features in the college.

Students undergo 16-week internship in the country’s best known corporate houses.

According to Mr. Pusthale, the focus on soft skills and English is the USP of ICFAI business schools all over the country.
