A look at some unique courses offered by Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheswara College, Ujire

“Managing home for happy living.” This is not a catch-phrase of any advertisement. It is the theme of an add-on course being offered by Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheswara College, Ujire, in Dakshina Kannada. The college also offers certificate courses in astrology, office automation, community participatory skills and a diploma course in the study of Prakrit.
Candidates who are not students of the college could also enrol for astrology and Prakrit. Other courses are y limited to students of the college. These courses have been introduced with a special interest by B. Yashovarma, principal. Some of them also serve as inter-disciplinary study subjects.
Home management
Contents include nutrition skills such as how to prepare food scientifically, flower arrangement, first aid techniques, dental care, making greeting cards, drawing and painting, yoga and pot painting. “We also teach beautician skills and how to keep young,” said Alphonsamma, Head of the Department of Home Sciences and in-charge of the course. This course is only for girls. Girls of any other discipline except Home Science department could enrol for the same.
The duration of the course is five to six months with a intake of 30 students in an academic year. Classes will be held only on Saturdays for three hours.
Astrology
Basics of astrology are taught under this one month course. Classes are held for two hours daily. This course has been attracting many women, especially housewives, said E. Mahabala Bhatta, Head of the Department of Sanskrit. Intake is 50 candidates a year.
Office automation
Final year B.Com students can join this six-month course. Students are given training in book keeping, cash and credit bills along with related aspects. They are exposed to accounting methods under Value Added Tax (VAT) scheme. Classes are held for 125 hours in an academic year (three hours per week), said P. N. Udayachandra, Head of the Department of Commerce. This has helped many students to secure jobs.
Community participatory skills
The course is organised by the Department of Economics and Rural Development in association with Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project. The intake is 20 students. Any Economics (B.A.) or Rural Development student can join it. It focuses on training the students on designing social awareness programmes and initiating and sustaining links with the community. The course is supplemented with field visits to self-help groups and villages.
Prakrit Studies
This one-year diploma course is recognised by the University of Mysore.
Skill enhancement
The Basic Life Skills and Entrepreneurship Development Centre (BLSED Centre) of the college organises skill enhancement programme in association with Infosys for the final year students. “We admit about 100 students in four batches. The programme focuses on preparing them for their career,” said Sojo Varughese, co-ordinator, SDM Rotary career guidance and placement cell of the college.
