The IBO school advantage
SUMIT BHATTACHARJEE
Today in any forum the topic of education makes its presence felt in some way or the other. With EAMCET and professional courses like engineering and medicine hogging the limelight, other options are rarely discussed.
In such a scenario the option of a diploma programme offered by the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) hardly comes to notice.
Though it is being offered by a select few schools and meant for the niche segment of society, this programme has got an international presence that paves the way for a smooth transition into the under-graduate arena world over.
IBO, a non-profit education foundation based in Geneva, Switzerland, was started about three decades ago. It has its presence in 1,300 schools in 110 countries.
The IBO programme is designed in three modules: Primary years programme (PYP), which caters to nursery to Std. V or VI; middle years programme (MYP) from Std. VII to X; and diploma programme (DP), which is plus two. The IBO programme is available in about 39 schools in India and these schools are called as international schools. T. Naga Prasad, Chairman of Oakridge International School, Hyderabad, says that there is no great change in the curriculum but the methodology of teaching makes the difference.
“There is only one board examination and that is at the diploma level. There is no board examination even for tenth. It is only an internal examination. The entire curriculum of IBO is not examination centric. It focuses more on the entire learning process.
