Activities of the students’ union and the affiliated associations of Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College were inagurated last week. Installing the office-bearers, the vice-president of Group HR, Chennai, S. Valliyappan, said that though the status of women had reached commendable heights in the country, rural women needed to come to the fore. He urged the new office-bearers to coordinate with the students and lead them in a better way. R. Dhivya from II M. Sc. Chemistry was installed as the chairperson, P. Radeepa from the Department of Bio-technology, vice-chairperson, and S. Haritha from Department of English, secretary. Vice-principal K. Geetha installed the new office-bearers, and college secretary R. Panchapakesan presided.

Extension and extra-curricular activities of Jamal Mohamed College were inaugurated recently. Presiding over the event, principal M. Sheik Mohamed spoke on honing the overall personality of students through extra-curricular activities. Manali S. Somasundaram of Bishop Heber College highlighted the importance of enrolling in NCC. NSS coordinator of Bharathidasan University K. Kanagaraj spoke on the activities involved in NSS, Red Ribbon Club and Abstinence Club. Former vice -principal P. M. Mansure, coordinator of extension activities P.N.P. Mohamed Shaputheen and vice-principal M. M. Shahul Hameed spoke.

Students were lectured on employment opportunities after graduation at a seminar that followed. Addressing the students, the Assistant Director of Employment Exchange, Tiruchi, P. Suresh Kumar, listed out various opportunities available in both government and private sectors. Emphasising the importance of communication skills, he said the candidate must be aware of the nature of the job before applying for it. Self-introspection before applying for a job would go a long way in avoiding disappointment. Over 350 students attended the seminar.

The Freshers’ Day celebration at Urumu Dhanalakshmi College last week was marked by distribution of Oxford dictionaries to 600 I-year students.

Presenting the dictionaries, Bharathidasan University Registrar V. Radhakrishnan exhorted the students to develop their vocabulary and communication skills. He noted that students of arts and science colleges were able to make a mark in job fairs owin g to their communication skills. Acquisition of soft skills through regular use of dictionaries would help the students to fare well in job interviews, he said.

Delivering the Freshers’ Day address, the principal of Srinivasan College of Arts and Science, Perambalur, and Member of Syndicate, Bharathidasan University, A. Mutharasu, said soft skills were essential to develop leadership qualities. He advised the students to acquire general knowledge and observed that the perception that only students of professional courses were at an advantage in the job market was no more relevant.

College chairman Kalki G.R. Varadharajulu, principal K. Sekar, and the Head of Commerce Department, S. Sekar, addressed the students.

Bishop Heber College has signed a memorandum of understanding with Wolverhampton University, U.K., to offer joint master’s programmes in Biotechnology and Management Studies.

The areas covered by the understanding includes collaboration in various academic activities, including staff exchange, research activities, and curriculum development.

The MoU was signed by the deputy vice-chancellor of Wolverhampton University, Geoff Hurd, and the college director, D. Swamiraj.

Professor of Applied Biology and Associate Dean, School of Applied Sciences, Wolverhampton University, Trevor Hocking; Swain Kay, International Relations Manager of the university, and members of the College Governing Board were present.
