Specialisation in Robotics Engineering
I am a Plus Two student and would like to specialise in robotics. Would you please provide me with information about the colleges offering this course and the scope of this field?

A robot is an automatic device that performs functions normally ascribed to human or a machine in the form of a human. Robotics involves a scientific study of robots. At present robots are present in almost every field of work. Robots can operate in any situation even in uncomfortable or dangerous environments. Today robots are taking over most of the manipulative, hazardous and tedious jobs in factories, mines, atomic plants, space ships, deep - sea vessels etc from man. The automation of work through robotics has lead to substantial increase in productivity.
Who can study
This specialised subject ‘Robotics’ is available for higher study in ME or M.Tech. level programmes. Therefore one should obtain a BE/ B.Tech. degree preferably in Mechanical or Electrical or Electronics Communication or Computer Engineering Branches.
Areas of specialisation and scope: In robotics there are different areas of specialization. Robotics is all about designing robots, maintaining them, developing new applications and conducting research.
Specalising in design and control in robotics is close to mechanical engineering. If you wish to specialize in control and hardware design of robots, a B.Tech. degree in Electrical or Electronics or Electronics and Communication Engineering is the best suited qualification. B.Tech. Computer Engineers can look at hardware design in robotics. The control part of the robot is all about certain aspects of Electrical Engineering.
A specialiszation in robotics engineering will lead to potential job opportunities in manufacturing, research, mining, nuclear, power plant maintenance and variety of other areas. Besides, there is a great scope for qualified experts and researchers in Research and Development related to Robotics.
Study facilities
Robotics specialisation is available in very few institutes/universities. They offer programmes in robotics engineering through their departments – mechanical, electrical, computer science, etc .
Robotics engineering can also be studied at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) Mumbai, Madras, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore .
•The Centre for Robotics and Mechatronics at IIT Kanpur offers a Master’s programme in robotics Engineering.
•Jadavpur University, Kolkata – 700032, (West Bengal) offers ME Robotics.
•The University of Hyderabad offers M.Tech. in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics.
•University College of Engineering under Osmania University, Hyderabad offers ME / M.Tech. in Automation and Robotics.
•MS University, Baroda conducts a masters programmes with specialisation in automation control and robotics.
•The Institute of Technology under the Banaras Hindu University conducts M.Tech. Production Engineering / Industrial Management Engineering with Robotics and Automation as electives.
•Thapur Institute of Engineering and Technology Patiala- 147004 conducts ME in CAD/ CAM and Robotics.
•The Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani – 333031 offers ME in Computer Science with robotics as a subject.
•Sri. Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning Prasanthi Nilayam offers M.Tech. Computer Science with specialisation in artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence is defined as the ability of an artificial mechanism to exhibit intelligent behaviour. It is closely associated with robotics.
•PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, conducts M.Tech. Mechanical with robotics as an elective subject.
•The SRM institute of Science and Technology Kattankulathur, Kancheepuram District ( www.srmuniv.ac.in) offers M.Tech. Robotics.
•The Department of Electronics under the Cochin University of Science and Technology offers MSc Electronic Science with specialisation in artificial intelligence, robotics, microwave electronics and computer technology.
First class B.Sc. degree holders with not less than 60 per cent aggregate marks in electronics / computer science / physics (with electronics) are eligible for admission. Selection is based on CUSAT-CAT.
•The Shanmugam College of Engineering Thanjavur affiliated to Bharatidasan University offers a course in artificial intelligence at the Bachelor of Engineering Degree level.
Higher Study Options after B.Arch.
My friend is doing B.Arch. course at NIT. Is it possible to go for M.Tech. courses (Non-M.Arch.) after B.Arch. If yes, for which course is she eligible to apply?

Graduates in architecture are only eligible for admission to the masters degree course in architecture (M.Arch.). Take it as a privilege. Nobody else (except civil engineering graduates in certain specialisation areas) can take up the M.Arch. programme. So also most of the M.Tech. programmes are earmarked for B.Tech. holders in the relevant branches.
Master of Design (M.Des.) programme is the best alternative higher-study option for B.Arch. holders. The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in Bombay and Delhi provide M.Des. (Industrial Design) courses and IIT Bombay also conducts an M.Des. (visual communication) Course for graduates in any engineering branch or architecture. Admission is based on Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) conducted by the IIT.
Aspirants should complete B.Arch. with high marks. During the final year, one can appear for CEED, the qualifying test for higher study in design with a scholarship. M.Des. course is a good option for meritorious B.Arch graduates.
The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, conducts a Master of Design Course in product design engineering. The minimum entry qualification is a second class Bachelors Degree in Engineering / Technology / Design / Architecture or equivalent degree in engineering including architecture. After screening based on GATE/ CEED scores, a Design Aptitude Test and interview will be conducted. Selection will be based on the combined performance of the candidate in the aptitude test and interview.
The National Institute of Design (NID) Paldi, Ahmedabad – 380007 ( www.nid.edu), also provides opportunities for graduates in engineering and architecture to pursue a Postgraduate Diploma Programme in Design (PGDPD). It covers furniture and interior design, toy design and development, etc. Selection is based on an all-India level aptitude test and interview.
CEPT University, Ahmedanbad – 380 009 ( www.cept.ac.in, www.spcept.org), provides higher study facilities for meritorious graduates in Architecture, in the following two year full-time AICTE approved Masters Degree Programmes.
•Master of Technology in Urban and Regional Planning (M.Tech. – URP)
•Master of Technology in Housing (M.Tech. – HSG)
Minimum entry qualification for bother these programme is Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture / Civil Engineering/ Planning or Masters Degree in Geography / Economics / Sociology.
•Master of Technology in Environmental Planning (M.Tec – EP)
•Master of Technology in Infrastructure Planning (M.Tech – IP) (Self financing)
Minimum entry qualification for both these programmes is a Bachelors Degree in Architecture / Civil Engineering / Planning.
•Master of Technology in Construction of Project Management (M.Tech – CPM) (self financing)
Entry qualification is a bachelors degree is Civil Engineering or Architecture. For more details visit the website www.cept.ac.in. Enquires: registrar@cept.ac.in.
•The International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (A Deemed University) offers MS Research and Ph.D. programmes in IT in Building Science. Meritorious graduates in Architecture are also eligible for admission ( www.iiit.ac.in).
