MEFMH offers courses in clinical psychology

Trainees can seek jobs in health and educational institutions as well as industries

The Mysore chapter of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, which has taken the franchise of Manasa Educational Foundation for Mental Health (MEFMH), has trained over 1,200 students in various aspects of psychology in the past four years. Training for the current year will begin this month.

MEFMH is a study and research centre recognised by Kuvempu University and conducting courses at Vijayanagar in Mysore.

According to the MEFMH Director K.A. Ashok Pai, “This year the Foundation has been permitted to start regular courses in M.Sc Clinical Psychology. Normally a student will have to do two years M.Phil or three years Ph.D. after completing two years’ Masters in Psychology. Our programme reduces the duration by two or three years and makes candidates a professional right away.”

The Foundation offers courses which meet international academic standards and are at the same time accessible to professionals, teachers, graduates and housewives who may not have had the opportunity to do a regular course in the University.

Tackling an evil

Dr. Pai said the PG Diploma in Mental Health in Chemical Dependency Counselling has great relevance in view of the increasing cases of substance abuse.

It offers training in handling the psychological problems of victims. It is a useful course for teachers, doctors, professionals, parents and all those who are interested in combating this social evil.

PG Diploma in Mental Health in Psychiatric Social Work has good employment potential. Interdisciplinary in nature, the course is essential for those who work in self-help groups, non-governmental agencies and industries. It also provides openings for higher research.

PG Diploma in Mental Health in Professional Counselling and Psychotherapy will solve problems and create the attitudinal changes which make the employees contribute their best.

The course is designed to provide basic training for all those who are supervisors, executives, managers or administrators in industrial organisations and educational institutions.

PG Diploma in Mental Health in Mental Retardation has received far less attention than it deserves. The lack of trained supportive staff is hampering the working of institutions for the mentally retarded.

In addition, lack of general awareness about the nature, problems and treatment of mental retardation has prevented the sensitive handling of patients.

The course is a must for those who are seeking placement as supportive staff in mental health institutions and educational institutions for mentally retarded.

Key role

PG Diploma in Mental Health and Sexuality and Sexual Counselling deals with ignorance about sexual health, which is one of the greatest problems of contemporary society.

The extent of sexual disorders, sex-related diseases and sexual abuse is staggering. From parents to teachers, all those who are in responsible positions need to be trained in sexual counselling. At a time when the AIDS time bomb is said to be ticking, sexual counselling has a key role to perform.

Balasubrahmanyam, who is the head of Mysore franchise, said that the response for the courses offered by the Foundation was good.

Examination for the academic year 2006-07 is progressing and admission for the next academic year will begin soon.
