What are the skills required to crack GMAT and get into institutions like ISB? My English is good but I lack confidence when speaking to others. What should I do?

Admission into many B-Schools is generally based on the scores obtained in GMAT along with academic background, group discussion, personal interview and also work experience.

Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) tests a person’s verbal, mathematical and analytical skills. It is a test of a candidate’s knowledge acquired over a period of time.

Various business schools use this score to assess a person’s aptitude and ensure his eligibility for admission.

The first section in GMAT is Analytical Writing Assessment, where you are given two writing tasks -- Analysis of an Issue and Analysis of an Argument. The second is quantitative section.

There are two types of questions-data sufficiency and problem solving.

The third is verbal section. The questions are based on Reading Comprehension, Critical Reasoning, and Sentence Correction. The pattern of the latter two sections is multiple-choice type.

So, all that is required to crack GMAT is general aptitude. So you must work towards sharpening it. Start preparing early and work regularly. Practice essay writing.

You can get a list of topics at www.mba.com. Review basic mathematics to improve skill and speed.

Improve English vocabulary and grammar. Spend good period of time on reading. This will help you to get acquainted to various topics, which in turn helps you to perform well at reading comprehension.

There are a number of coaching centres that train students to prepare students to give GMAT.

There are also several online resources available for the same. Practice as many GMAT test papers as you can so that you are familiarised with test taking.

Coming to spoken English, it can be improved by practice. Speak in English as much as possible. Though you might find it difficult in the beginning, you will gradually improve. Do not hesitate to ask your family members or superiors to correct you when you make any mistake. Listening to people speaking in English also improves it.

Listen to English news and make use of other aids like CDs and cassettes that are specially designed for the purpose.

Also, remember that to speak good English, you must also think in English. Unless you make an attempt, you cannot overcome this limitation.
