The third batch of value added course, postgraduate diploma in total quality management, conducted by the Quality Circle Forum of India (QCFI), Madurai Chapter, was inaugurated at SACS MAVMM Engineering College on Wednesday. The course is meant for final year engineering students, who will have opportunities to get real time projects in various industries as well as jobs in quality assurance departments in core and software industries.

D. K. Srivatsava, Additional Executive Director, QCFI, Hyderabad, inaugurated the course. The Principal, P. Manjunatha Rao, welcomed the gathering and briefed about the objectives of the course.

The Electrical and Electronics Engineering Association, WAVOS, of KLN College of Information Technology was inaugurated by S. Nagarajan, Superintending Engineer of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, recently.

In his address, Mr. Nagarajan explained the main activities of the TNEB and highlighted the process of generation, transmission and utilisation of power. S.V.S. Shivnath, Secretary, and K.P. Lakshmanan, Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering spoke.

A 16-member team of final year students of Department of Home Science, Home Science College and Research Institute, camped at Kutladampatti village near Vadipatti as part of Rural Home Science Work Experience Programme.

They involved themselves in preparing a village map using available materials. Banumathi, Head, and Amutha, Associate Professor, Department of Food Science and Nutrition, delivered a series of lectures on health and hygiene.

There was also a demonstration on preparation of tender coconut jelly, mango squash and jam. The students established a nutrition garden near the anganwadi and planted saplings around the local school.

The Collector, S. S. Jawahar, who visited the village during the camp, encouraged the students to involve themselves in more such rural-based activities.

The career guidance cell of Nadar Mahajana Sangam Sermathai Vasan College for Women conducted a workshop on ‘interview techniques’ for its students recently. M. Sudha of AKM English Academy was the chief guest.

The college also organised a coaching session for aptitude test in which 50 students participated.

At an orientation programme for National Service Scheme volunteers, S. Dheenadayalan, Lecturer, Madura College, spoke about the aims and objectives of NSS.

A seminar on identification and development of talent among students was organised.

The Red Ribbon Club of the college organised a two-day workshop on ‘Development of Youth.’ Jeyachandran, Regional Manager, Centre for AIDS Control, conducted programmes on personality development and self-control.

The college also celebrated the 105th birth anniversary of Kamaraj as ‘Educational Development Day’ recently.

The Department of English of Thiagarajar College organised a two-day bridge course for first year students of undergraduate courses recently.

The course was aimed at providing a smooth transition from secondary to tertiary level of learning and enabling students to face challenges forced by the shift in learning from Tamil to English.

The sessions were designed to develop the four basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. To shed their inhibitions, students were given exercises through pair work and role play during the interactive session.

The innovative listening session exposed students to conversation patterns in the right accent and intonation. Familiarity with study aids such as dictionaries, thesaurus, interactive CDs and DVDs and Internet was another major area of focus. The course witnessed enthusiastic participation of the 450 students. The Principal, R. Raja Govindasamy, inaugurated the programme.

The Department of Library of the college organised the 15th Readers’ Club meeting on Wednesday. S. Sridhar, Reader in Botany, reviewed the book ‘The Fifth Horse Man’ written by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre. Sharmila, first year postgraduate student of Botany, reviewed ‘En Uire Kannama’ by Ramani Chandran. A quiz competition on current affairs was also conducted on the occasion. The Librarian, P. Ushadevi, presided over the meeting. Subathra Devi of English Department proposed a vote of thanks.
