Getting industry-ready through training in PLC

For the final-year students of Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of M. I. E. T. Engineering College, the week-long technology camp on ‘Industrial Automation’ they underwent recently was a key value-add.

The college collaborated with the Chennai-based Cyborg Control Private Limited (CCPL) to conduct the camp that exposed them to the nuances of Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and Embedded Systems.

By virtue of the programme, the students would be well equipped to undertake projects in industries with confidence, according to the Department Head, K. Selvaraj.

Though ECE students cover a total of 60 papers in their eight semesters, they have to still spend much time and money to undergo specialised training in PLC after completion of their degree to be industry-ready. There have been instances of students doing well in group discussion and campus interviews and faltering in technical interview to which the manufacturing sector attaches utmost importance. Hence the need-based training under the expert guidance of CCPL. Such trainings not only put the students in good stead during campus interviews, but also provide the foundation for the students to pursue higher studies and research, believes the College Director, S.V. Sambasivam. The exposure to PLC is an addition this year. The previous batch of students underwent training in Embedded Systems last year.

During the course of the project that they undertook in top-notch concerns including the Neyveli Lignite Corporation, Ennore Thermal Power Station, and Seshasayee Paper Board at Erode. According to college chairman A. Mohamed Yunus, students gain an indepth knowledge of the concepts theoretically and practically through such programmes. At the inaugural of the programme, the Deputy General Manager, HRDC, BHEL, M. Thiruvalluvar, briefed on the ‘C’ theory of manufacturing products. The cost incurred, competent environment and customer demand must be the priority of any manufacturers.

He urged the students to improve their competency level by developing skill, knowledge and attitude.
