Future-oriented: S. Ranganathan, Scientist, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, addressing a national workshop on Nanomaterials at Mepco Schlenk Engineering College, Sivakasi.

Nano Technology is going to herald a revolution towards the end of 21st century, if sufficient breakthrough in nanotechnology is achieved, according to S. Ranganathan, Scientist, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

He was the chief guest of a national workshop on Nano materials organised recently by the Department of Physics, Mepco Schlenk Engineering College, Sivakasi.

B. Viswanathan of Indian Institute of Technology – Madras, also echoed similar thoughts. Delivering the valedictory address, he said that nano technology along with bio technology and information technology were the three promising fields capable of producing revolution in the present scenario of technologies.

Principal, S. Balakrishnan, presided over the inaugural function. N. Selvakumar, Professor, Mechanical Engineering Department, welcomed and K. Jayasubramanian, Assistant Professor, Chemistry department proposed a vote of thanks.

The workshop focussed on synthesis, characterisation and applications of nano materials. About 125 participants from various institutes attended the workshop.

A State-level conference on ‘Ilakiyathil ariviyal’ was conducted at V.V. Vanniaperumal for Women, Virudhunagar, recently. K. Nagamani, Vice Principal, presided over the programme. Dr. Jeyalakshmi, Mother Teresa University, Kodaikanal, P. Ananthakumar, Gandhigram Rural University, Gandhigram, T. Sethupandian, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, P. Parvathy, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, delivered lectures on various topics such as ‘sanga m’ literature, modern literature and didactic literature.

Environmental pollution and the means to be adopted to minimise it is the buzz word. And the Department of Chemistry of VHN Senthikumara Nadar College at Virudhunagar choose this theme for an inter-collegiate programme as part of the college’s diamond jubilee celebration. A total of 125 Chemistry students from 21 colleges from southern districts participated in the “ChemTelos-2007” held on August 31. The participants came up with many new ideas to minimis e pollution through posters, models and papers. B. Saranya of Sri Parasakthi College for Women, Courtallam won the first prize in paper presentation while S. Karthiga and V. Karthigaiselvi of the same college got the first prize in poster presentation. Girls from Lady Doak College, Madurai, V. Tamil Mani and M. Sherin took the first place in Chem-speed and Chem-quiz competitions. R. Krishnavineka and C. Rohini of VPMM Arts and Science College for Women, Srivilliputtur bagged the first prize in model-making. T.S.Sankaravel, President of the college managing board and P.C.S.Govindaraja Perumal, secretary and correspondent the Principal, Dr. S. Manickavel, Dr. K.Rajasekaran, Professor of Chemistry appreciated the students.

The Economics Association of V.O.C. College, Tuticorin, was inaugurated recently. The chief guest, T. Chibi Chelliah, Head, Department of Economics, Pope’s College, Sawyerpuram, delivered a lecture on ‘The impact of globalisation on the Indian Economy’. Suresh Pandi, a final year economics student of the college, presented a paper on ‘Role of youth in economic development’ at the inaugural. S Balakrishnan, Head, Department of Economics of the college, was also present.

The National Engineering College, Kovilpatti, organised a one-day national level workshop on ‘Recent trends in insulation engineering’ on its premises recently. Faculty members from Annai Mathammal Sheela Engineering College, Erumapatti, Syed Ammal Engineering College, Ramnathapuram, Einstien Engineering College, Tirunelveli, P S R Engineering College, Sivakasi, and the host college, attended the programme.

A training programme in ‘Basics of high voltage lab facility’ was organised by the National Engineering College, Kovilpatti, recently. About 50 students from various engineering colleges underwent the training.

Morgans Math Club was inaugurated at Syed Ammal Engineering College, Ramanathapuram, recently. T. Veerarajan, renowned mathematician, inaugurated the club and spoke on importance of mathematics in the students’ career.

N. Mohamed Sheriff, Principal and Chinnadurai Abdullah, Secretary of the college addressed the students.

A conference on ‘Effect of global warming and renewable energy’ was also held at the college. R. Elankovan, Deputy Manager, BHEL, Tiruchi spoke on ‘New technologies in renewable energy sources.’ S. Suresh, National Institute of Technology, also spoke. A. Jeya Saravanan and P. Dinesh Babu coordinated the conference.
