Books on spoken English

Learning to communicate clearly and effectively is vital in order to function in society, and English has become the globally accepted link language. It has therefore become essential to master it.

‘A Foundation Course in Spoken English’, published in two parts by Orient Longman, in collaboration with the Department of Intermediate Education precisely addresses to that issue. The books were launched by Andhra Pradesh State Council fo r Higher Education Chairman K.C. Reddy recently. The books are intended to help develop the oral communication skills of learners who have had a regional language medium of instruction at school and who have had little or no exposure to spoken English. The book can also be used effectively as self-instructional material by persons of an older age group, employed or engaged in different activities of their own.

The material in the form of modules has already been used by the students of over seventy Government junior colleges across the State and it has been found to be useful.

Workshops to train lecturers in using the material effectively have also been conducted by Orient Longman on behalf of the Commissionerate of Intermediate Education.

Two audio Compact Discs (CDs) that give learners an opportunity to listen to dialogues in everyday situations and provide answers to the practice exercises as well come with the books.

Prof S. Upendran, an expert in English Language Teaching, a columnist with The Hindu, has lent his voice for the project. The books are written by Kamlesh Sadanand and Susheela Punitha.

More details about the books can be had on 99596-04664 or on hydgeneral@orientlongman.com.
