Tackle temper, stay happy
V.PREETHI
MATTERS OF THE MIND: It is always healthier and happier to be calm rather than lose your cool over situations.
Bandari Srinivas Institute of Technology: It’s a wonder how we tend to lose out on some of life’s short yet great experiences, by letting our temper get the better of us, isn’t it? Now, don’t misunderstand me. I am not at all the preachy kind and I solemnly swear that I will do my very best not to sound so!
Anyway, here I was, fretting and fuming, on my way back home from college, when this thought struck me. The obvious question would be; why was I doing something that’s usually associated with an angry bull, especially one in front of which a red cloth is being waved in the most disrespectful manner (I know what you’re thinking, I have a pathetic sense of humour).
Well, it was raining cats and dogs, and the road that goes towards home is lined with shrubs, trees and all the works.
No, that’s not why I was in such a great temper. The actual cause of my irritability was my position: I was sitting almost on the footboard…the topmost step to be accurate. I was sitting there, cursing myself and all those around me; myself because had I finished my lab work sooner, I would have ‘caught’ a seat and others because they had been lucky enough to finish earlier than me!
The journey back home takes an hour-and-a-half and I was having great pleasure imagining the state of my back by the time I reached home! No, it’s not at all funny! Half-an-hour down the road, my back is hurting like its been run over, my head threatens to join in, I am very close to losing my cool and just about manage to shoot a reply to my footboard mate without snapping at her…poor thing, she’s in the same state as I am.
Now, I look out through the door and suddenly realise that I have been missing out on all of nature’s beauty…it’s been raining and the greenery around is stunning.
I see it everyday…the same road that leads to college, the same old bus, the same old fields and trees…but it looked entirely different and beautiful. I tell myself…why not enjoy what is on offer and simply ignore my backache.
After all, how many times am I going to get this chance again? Certainly, it doesn’t rain everyday and I wont have such a convenient position (alas, uncomfortable) to enjoy nature’s beauty…and when I do manage to tune my mind to this new take on my situation, hey!
My back feels much better and my headache vanishes!
Trust me I seriously am not exaggerating things this time around.
I’ve learnt my lesson: it’s always better to temper your temper; else you don’t even know what you’re losing in the bargain!
And even if there’s nothing involved, it’s always healthier and happier to be calm rather than lose your cool, isn’t it?
