NSS volunteers clean park, plant saplings
Social activities: NSS volunteers of Avinashilingam University at Urmandampalayam in Coimbatore.
As part of the special 10-day NSS camp, the second year undergraduate students of Avinashilingam University conducted various welfare programmes at Urmandampalayam. They invited the village panchayat heads and councillors of the villages and initiated talks on socially relevant issues. They cleaned the park in the areas and planted saplings. An interactive session on AIDS was also conducted.
The Department of Biotechnology, Karpagam Arts and Science College, organised a two-day national conference on Pharmaceutical Biotechnology. A.Saraswathy, Assistant Director and Head, Captain Srinivasa Murti Drug research Institute, Chennai, inaugurated the conference. She spoke about phytochemical analysis, drug formulation, and patenting. She encouraged students to take up research regarding medicinal plants.
The Department of Social Work of Dr. GRD College of Science, Coimbatore, organised an educational tour to Neyveli Lignite Corporation recently. Students specialising in personnel management and industrial relations visited mines and thermal power station. Rally to create awareness on learning disability
The NSS unit of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University undertook a rally to create awareness on “Learning Disability.” It was to create awareness about the condition and make parents, teachers and the general public understand that children with learning disability were not mentally ill and that it was just a difficulty in acquiring learning skills. By providing the right kind of training, their problem could be solved, the volunteers explained. About 450 volunteers participated.
In connection with NSS Day celebrations, the NSS units of Dr. N.G.P. Arts and Science College organised a function in which C. Jayakumar, Bahrain Learning Institute, Bahrain, spoke on “Deficiency in Learning.” NSS programme officers, teachers and students participated. Student volunteers were felicitated.
The Red Ribbon Club of KSG College of Arts and Science in association with the Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society (TANSACS) conducted a two-day workshop titled “Celebration of Life,” which essentially discussed the problems faced by people living with HIV/AIDS.
The role of NSS units in taking the message across to the rural population was stressed. Arthra Asokan, CDC Consultant and Communication Strategist of TANSACS, said the disease killed 8,000 people a day and the task of educating young people needed to be taken up urgently.
The Department of Social Work organised a seminar on “Alzheimer’s Disease” to mark the World Alzheimer’s Day on September 21. Ponni Muraleedharan, Psychiatrist, KG Hospital, conducted the seminar.
She explained the condition of dementia and the need for counselling caretakers. The management of the disease and the people affected by it was also discussed. The role of social workers in treating such patients was very crucial, she said.
Jansons School of Business organised a workshop on “Cultural Awareness” recently. Rajeshwar Balasundaram, Chief Operating Officer, of Global Adjustments Services, Chennai, was the chief guest. He explained how India was unique in terms of diverse cultures and languages.
He said that managers should be sensitive to the needs of customers and elaborated on the traits of a good manager. He advised students to look for entrepreneurial opportunities.
Park College of Engineering and Tekhnology organised a national-level symposium. J. Krishnan, Scientist, Baba Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, inaugurated the seminar. He spoke about the designing, manufacturing and maintenance of atomic energy and atomic weapons.
He also spoke about the country’s need to achieve self sufficiency in atomic and nuclear science. More than 20 research papers were presented.
C. Muthukumaraswamy, Secretary, Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare, addressed the students of Coimbatore Institute of Management and Technology about the qualities required to be a manager. He encouraged students to cultivate reading habit and think too.
