Diplomas in psychology and counselling

There is demand for persons qualified in psychology to teach behavioural sciences in management institutions.

Bharathidasan University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Athma Institute of Mental Health and Social Sciences (AIMSS) in Tiruchirappalli paving the way for the latter to offer one-year postgraduate diploma courses in Counselling and Guidance; Child and Adolescent Psychology; and Organisational Psychology.

The MoU documents were exchanged recently between vice-chancellor M. Ponnavaikko and AIMSS director K. Ramakrishnan.

Advocating a multi-disciplinary approach in patient care, research and training programmes, and in the promotion, prevention and cure aspects of clinical services in the area of mental health and human behavioural sciences, Dr. Ramakrishnan, Consultant Psychiatrist, emphasises that all the courses are job-oriented with 100 per cent placement and employment opportunities as counsellors, psychologists or trainers in schools, colleges, IT companies, industries, hospitals, NGOs and social welfare and research organisations.

Teaching and research are the major fields employing qualified psychologists. There is demand for persons qualified in psychology to teach behavioural sciences in management institutions.

Many schools now appoint educational counsellors to guide students, particularly underachievers.

Industrial and organisational counsellors apply psychological techniques to personnel administration, and management and marketing, focussing on issues such as motivation and morale in workplace.

Psychologists with an additional degree in human relations can join the human resource development departments in business and industry.

Freelancing as a counsellor in different areas is increasingly becoming a lucrative career, informs Dr. Ramakrishnan.

Internet has also opened new vistas for counsellors. Online chats with the counsellor and developing personality through mock interviews and aptitude tests are some of the features of online counselling, Dr. Ramakrishnan adds.
