Reaching out: French class in progress at Alliance Francaise in Bangalore.
Speaking French like the French do is no easy job. For a beginner, the language is pretty daunting to master. Yet it is too good to be ignored. And so you have Bangalore’s young and old queue up before French institutes to learn the basics of a language that always had a prefix for culture. With the Alliance Francaise in Bangalore decentralising to let people learn from centres spread across the city, the pull of the language has only got stronger.
At the Alliance Francaise de Bangalore, you could study French in two ways. There are daily courses, where classes go on for two hours, five days a week. The entire programme is completed in two months. The weekend courses run on Saturdays and Sundays, for three hours. This programme takes three months to complete.
The daily courses are held at all the five centres of the Institute in Bangalore, including Vasanthnagar (Thimmaiah Road, opposite UNI Building); Koramangala (YWCA, 20th Main, 6th Block, near Koramangala Police Station); Jyothi Nivas College, Hosur Road; Domlur (Bangalore International Centre, TERI Building, 4th Main, Domlur 2nd Stage) and Banashankari (Suchitra Film Society, 9th Main, Banashankari 2nd Stage).
Alliance Francaise is a not-for-profit organisation founded in 1883, which now has branches in more than 138 countries. Its goals are the dissemination of French language and culture, which it does through classes, lectures, exhibitions, other cultural events, scholarships, and promotion of cultural diversity. In India, Alliance Francaise exists in 26 cities spread across 15 States. The diplomas issued by them are recognised the world over.
After finishing the Alliance courses, students could appear for the corresponding DELF or DALF examinations at any of its centres. Clearing the examinations will help the students get the internationally recognised diplomas accredited by the French national education system.
Here’s what an Alliance official has to say about the teaching methodology: “Students have the advantage of modern methods of instruction that enable them to actually use the language in everyday-life situations, both in speaking and writing. They can discover a fascinating civilisation through texts, images, documents pertaining to life in France.”
Students could also attend French film festivals, concerts, dance recitals and other events organised by the Alliance Francaise.
Corporate courses
The Institute also conducts many corporate courses on demand at the company premises. The objective is to help acquire a working knowledge of the language, with emphasis on basic written and spoken communication suited to the working environment. Another programme is the cross-cultural workshop on France. This is designed to help the Indian employee or businessman going to France to understand his French counterpart and French business etiquette better.
The sessions are centered around themes ranging from culture, history, everyday life, and table etiquette to economy, hierarchy within the French company and business meetings.
