PG programme in emergency care

Candidates will be trained in varied instructional strategies

The second batch of Post Graduate Programme in Emergency Care offered by Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI) with an intake of 63 students was inaugurated by Assembly Speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy.

The two-year post graduation programme in emergency care is a full-time residential programme training individuals in varied instructional strategies and latest technologies in emergency medical services, personal and scene safety, scene and patient a ssessment and patient care among others.

Four phases

The course has four phases of education -- didactic, laboratory, clinical/field and summative field internship. The programme is jointly designed by Stanford School of Medicine, USA. Joint Stanford-EMRI certification will be given to successful candidates.

The programme covers extensive clinical knowledge while educating and training students in developing skills in leadership, communication and education in emergency management.

The contents are from relevant anatomy to the evidence-based interventions in advanced skills. Focus will be on review of human systems, therapeutic communication, pharmacology, ambulance operations, medical incident command, rescue awareness, trauma system and mechanism of injury, patient care in special challenges, toxicology, environmental emergencies and advanced cardiac life support, paediatric life support, trauma resuscitation, advanced airway management and related skills.

15 modules

The medical aspect will be covered in 15 modules. In addition, four modules on management topics; two modules on research; one module each on IT and English also form part of the curriculum. Soft skills will be dealt in two special modules.

Successful candidates of the PGPEC program will be able to provide global quality medical care in emergencies in pre-hospital and clinical settings.

These trained people can also become Preceptors and Instructors in EMT & Paramedic Institutes coming up in the country.

Those interested can take up research in community and clinical based medical, trauma, paediatric and gynaecological emergencies.
