Added responsibility
The provisional membership status that the Washington Accord has granted to the National Board of Accreditation does not mean that the subsequent grant of full membership or signatory status can be taken for granted. The National Board of Accreditation (NBA) will have to develop further accreditation or recognition procedures with the goal of achieving full signatory status in due course. According to the accord, the member country’s accrediting institution
“must demonstrate that the accreditation system for which it has responsibility appears to be conceptually similar to those of the other signatories of the accord. However, the awarding of provisional status does not in any way imply a guarantee of the granting of full signatory status.”
The NBA-accredited programmes of our engineering institutions will not get retrospective recognition. Only programmes accredited after the entry of NBA into the accord will be considered for equivalency. For degrees earned prior to this, each signatory assesses the programmes on an individual basis, depending on their specific policies. Individual degrees cannot be submitted for recognition under the Washington Accord. The accord also does not directly deal with the licensing or registration of engineers. But it covers the academic part of the licensing requirements and to that extent makes the gaining of professional recognition in another signatory country easier.
