Banyan MoU for PG course in social development
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences of the University College London (UCL) and The Banyan Academy of Leadership in Mental Health (BALM), Chennai, last week, for commencing a master’s degree in Business Administration in Social Development, in 2008. Giving details of the new synergy between UCL and BALM, UCL vice-president Michael Worton said the joint initiative would provide for a 6-month student exchange progra
mme in London and hands-on training in Chennai.
“As part of our commitment to education for global citizenship, the UCL-BALM tie-up will open up newer opportunities in the areas of mental health management and other allied issues concerning homelessness.” Vincent C. Emery, vice-head, UCL Graduate School, and Professor of Virology, said the MoU would promote among other things, a cooperative relationship between UCL and BALM. Speaking on behalf of BALM, R. Madhuri Menon, advisor, and Balraj Vasudevan, trustee, said the initiative would help to meet the biggest challenge of preparing the skilled human resource and effectively put to use the expertise within the Chennai-based NGO, The Banyan, which had bridged the gap between knowledge and practice. Vandana Gopikumar, Founder of The Banyan, said the synergy with UCL was yet another milestone in their efforts in furthering the cause of community mental health.
