International universities and their representatives from four continents gathered at the Hotel Chola Sheraton this weekend for the International Education Fair organised by the Association of Accredited Advisors on Overseas Education (AAAOE), an internally audited group of 130 advisors. Students with completed applications can get on-the-spot admission as well as have their questions answered about living and studying overseas.

“Education plays an important role in the wealth of a nation. The international fair will be helpful for students looking for higher education opportunities and also for universities wanting memorandums of understanding with foreign universities,” said Justice S. Jagadeesan, Former High Court Judge and Chairman of the Intellectual Property Rights Appellate Board, at the inaugural function.

The judge gave the following advice to students: Research colleges one and a half years before you plan to apply; do not stick only to one source of information; do not opt only for highly selective colleges but try to have a mix of colleges; find out the application procedure; consider the cost and financial aid available; and, check the faculty profile.

He also said that signing memorandums of understanding with foreign universities would help improve standards in colleges here. “If foreign professors are invited here the education field will progress faster than the research field,” he said.

“An international education gives general understanding, knowledge and skills for the interdependent, culturally-diverse, globalised world of today,” said Dr. J. Ramachandran, Chancellor, AMET University. He added: “Education is the passport of the future. Tomorrow belongs to the people who apply today.”
