Q & A

I am a Plus-Two student (science group) interested in science communication. What are the career prospects?

M.S. Science Communication is offered by the National Council of Science Museums, an autonomous scientific and research organisation in Kolkata under the Ministry of Culture. It offers a two-year postgraduate programme.

Essential qualification for the course is you should be an engineering or technology graduate in mechanical/ information technology/ computer/ telecommunication/ instrumentation/ chemical/ production/ metallurgy or possess I class M.Sc. degree in physics / chemistry / bioscience/ environmental sciences.

This course is for people who want to train as professional science communicators, but are unsure which employment sector might suit them best. Academic and practical components provide a broad overview of the professional science communication landscape.

The course introduces some of the contemporary debates surrounding science and its communication. It examines the recent work in the humanities and social sciences that questions assumptions about both science and communication.

The course module is divided into two parts. The first part introduces debates about the nature of science, its relation to other disciplines and the broader culture.

It considers key ideas from the philosophy and sociology of science centred on the concepts of intervention, representation and, most recently, of science as a social construction.

The second half further develops ideas about social constructivism by looking at how media texts are constructed.

Drawing on work in cultural and media studies and focussing on key ideas such as signification, ideology, myth, and metaphor, it looks at how texts and images in the mass media generate meaning and how different audiences read texts.

Career opportunities after the course include print journalism, new media work, broadcast television or radio production and presentation, public affairs and public relations, museums/galleries and festivals, science policy work, academic research and development, and teaching.

I am studying computer science engineering (pre-final year). I would like to know about a career in financial engineering.

Computational finance or financial engineering is a cross-disciplinary field which relies on mathematical finance, numerical methods and computer simulations to make trading, hedging and investment decisions, as well as facilitating the risk management of those decisions.

In other words, it involves financial theory, methods of engineering, tools of mathematics and the practice of programming.

Financial engineering empowers participants with the ability to implement solutions, in areas of high technology finance, such as risk management, product structuring, quantitative asset management, quantitative trading, quantitative research and financial information technology. It uses tools from finance, applied mathematics, computer science, statistics and economic theory.

Investment banks, hedge funds, insurance companies, corporate risk managers and regulatory agencies apply the methods of financial engineering to such problems as derivative securities valuation, risk management, strategic planning and dynamic investment strategies.

As the pace of financial innovation increases, the need for highly qualified people with specific training in financial engineering intensifies. Areas where financial engineering techniques are employed include:

Investment banking, risk management software, corporate strategic planning, securities trading and financial risk management, derivatives trading and risk management and investment management. A postgraduate programme in financial engineering is offered by Institute of Financial Management and Research, Chennai.
