Students control traffic on Traffic Awareness Week



ROLE PLAY: NCC cadets of Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya Polytechnic College engaged in traffic control duty at a busy junction in the city.

Traffic Awareness Week was observed at the Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya Polytechnic College by the NCC wing of the college. A. Philip F. Kennedy, Inspector of Police, urged the students to strictly follow traffic rules. He told them that in the Perianaickenpalayam zone, the number of accidents in 2007 had reduced as compared to that of the previous year. The students also did traffic control duty for a week at three traffic junctions in the city.

The G.R. Damodaran College of Education and Lotus Eye Care Centre jointly organized a free eye-screening programme in the college premises recently. The students had earlier mobilized people from Muthugoundanpudur, Kurumbapalayam, Sulur, and Sulur Pirivu. They also arranged for transportation of the villagers to the college premises. More than 150 people had their eyes screened and those who required treatment were referred to the hospital for free follow up.

NGP College of Education celebrated the Kamban Vizha recently. The Kamban Kazhagam organized a debate on Kambaramayanam. Two teams consisting of three members each participated in the debate. The winning team was presented a purse of Rs. 250 each while the runners-up were given Rs. 150. The Kovai Kamban Kazhagam donated books on Kambaramayanam to all participants and also to the college library.

The Department of Social Work of the Karpagam Arts and Science College observed World AIDS Day in the college premises. An exhibition and theme-based activities in the form of skits, songs and mime were performed to create awareness among the students on AIDS. Students also distributed the Red Ribbon and other material to the staff and students as a symbol of creating awareness.

The Department of Adult, Continuing Education, Extension and Field Outreach of the Avinashilingam University for Women, organized a programme on ‘Basic Fire Safety’ recently. Selva Mariappan, Branch Manager, Usha Fire Safety Equipment Pvt. Ltd., said that though people present at the spot can do the initial detection and basic fire fighting, those who are trained in the fire fighting skills could only do the actual fire fighting. A fire brigade was required to control a fire that had gone beyond control, he said. Several NSS volunteers participated in the programme.

The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of the SNS College of Technology organized a technical symposium “Phazor” recently. K. Raghunandanan, Deputy General Manager of Larsen & Toubro Limited, Coimbatore, underlined the importance between the industry and institution in order to produce good products on either side. Industry-institution interactions by way of signing memoranda of understanding, conducting symposia and workshops would make t he students know the need of the industry, he opined.

The Library and Information Centre of the Kongunadu Arts and Science College conducted a library orientation programme for the students. The students will have to undergo a 90-hour programme in installments of half-day sessions. The training will create awareness to use the modern and digital library system without seeking help from the library staff. Students were also taught to use other facilities like mini-theatre, LCD projector, laptops, virtual teaching materials, sc anning, bar-coding, Internet access, etc.

Rathinam College of Arts and Science organized a traffic awareness campaign in the college premises in co-ordination with the Police Department and Chennai Silks. A team of police officials instructed the students on traffic awareness and how to prevent accidents. Students were advised to adhere to traffic rules strictly and to avoid using mobile phones while driving. Materials containing awareness information were distributed to the students. Nearly 2,000 students both fr om the college and nearby schools attended the programme.

The School of Management of Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology organized a management meet called “Chanakya” for the students. A.K. Pattabiraman, Head-Accreditation Process for South India, Tata Consultancy Services Limited, Chennai, underlined the need to introduce reforms in management education to meet the global challenges in the corporate world. The meet had various events on different functional areas like marketing, finance, human resource management and systems. Nearly 130 students from 11 B-schools participated.

Karpagam College of Engineering and UTL Technologies, Bangalore, jointly organised a seminar and exhibition on “Current Trends in VLSI Design”. R. Radhakrishnan, Vice-Chancellor, Anna University, Coimbatore, inaugurated the seminar and urged that all colleges emulate the education system of the West to achieve good standards in education.
