People have a false notion that Radio jockeying is just all about talking and hanging onto mike sets, but it is different. “As a RJ, you play music; tell about the singers, the movie it is from, and just about everything. We have to also tell about what’s happening in the city, about the events and about traffic. We need to have general knowledge and keep updating with every aspect in the surroundings,” informs another RJ Sekhar, who made a name for himself as Sekhar Dada among the radio lovers. He also equalled the record of continuous radio jockeying for 92.7 hours recently.
Responsible medium
Besides being a powerful and responsible medium, radio jockeying can also be fun and exciting. One has to keep innovating and conceiving new programmes daily as there can be many testing times.
For instance, you have to make an important announcement and there would be only 15 seconds left in the programme. In the process, you make a mistake and you must know how to carry it off and avoid it in the future, he says.
Such is the craze that even professionals from different fields are now opting radio jockeying and the reasons are many.
“While, it is exciting and entertaining to talk to people over phone, the response and reputation you get off the job is immeasurable. People in my locality look at me as a celebrity and introduce me to their friends and relatives, the pays are quite good as well,” says Archana, a RJ and a qualified professional company secretary.
For the right and talented person, sky is the limit, when it comes to remuneration in this field.
There are RJ’s in the country who earn more than Chief Executive Officers of MNC’s and as a beginner one can earn around Rs. 10, 000 per month.
Channels do encourage youngsters to work as trainees and offer them a monthly stipend, says BIG 92.7 FM Station Head Ashwin Padmanabhan.
After couple of years of radio jockeying, one can also become a producer for a programme, executive producer and then station heads.
There is everything in it, he adds.
And with several new radio channels coming up in the cities, districts and big towns, the popularity of this profession is slowly but surely gaining momentum in the State.
