The Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, is synonymous with success, more so, for southern students who have literally dominated the admissions till the online test was introduced a couple of years ago.
Online test for BITS admission
The university, has called for applications for admission to all the Integrated First Degree programmes to be offered at the Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad campuses for the academic year 2008-09. Admissions would be made on the basis of a Computer-based Online Test.
The Hyderabad campus of BITS-Pilani, which will be operational from the coming academic year, offers an additional stream in Electronics and Communication Engineering apart from other courses offered at both Pilani and Goa campuses.
V.S. Rao, Director of BITS-Pilani, Hyderabad campus, assures that the quality of education at all the three centres will be the same. For admission to B.Pharm. (Hons.) and M.Sc.(Hons.) Biological Sciences programmes, candidates should have passed Intermediate or class XII examination of 10+2 system with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Mathematics and possess adequate proficiency in English.
Candidates having both Mathematics and Biology in 10+2 have to decide whether they wish to appear in Mathematics or Biology subjects in BITSAT-2008.
However, admissions to all the programmes are based on some conditions.
The candidate should have obtained a minimum of aggregate 80 per cent marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects or Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects in Intermediate with at least 60 per cent marks in each of the Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics / Biology subjects.
Students who are appearing for Intermediate in 2008 or who have passed it in 2007 only are eligible to appear in the BITSAT-2008 test. Admissions will be made purely on merit. The merit position of the candidate for admission will be based on the score obtained by the candidate in the BITSAT-2008. However, their eligibility for admission is subject to fulfilling the requirement of minimum marks in 12th examination.
To attract the best of talent, BITS continues to admit all the students who obtained first ranks in their respective board examination. First rank students of all Central and State boards in India for the year 2008 will be given direct admission to the programme of their choice, irrespective of their BITSAT-2008 score as per the eligibility criteria mentioned above.
‘Computer-Based Online test’ means the candidate sits in front of a computer and the questions are presented on the computer monitor and the candidate submits the answers through the use of keyboard or mouse.
Each computer is connected to a server which prepares the question set and delivers it to the candidate on the computer.
BITSAT-2008 will be offered over a period of time and the candidate can choose the centre, the day and time of his/her convenience to take the test. BITSAT-2008 will be of a total three-hour duration. Further details can be had from www.bits-pilani.ac.in. Deadline to apply for BITSAT-2008: January 31, 2008
