`Recognition for remote sensing institute
The Centre for Remote Sensing of Bharathidasan University has been accorded the status of Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS).The centre has been offering M.Tech. in Geological Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics for over a decade with a seed support of Rs.25 lakh from AICTE and M.Sc. Geoinformatics funded by UGC to the tune of Rs. 37 lakh under its “Innovative Programme
” for the past 4-5 years.
It has conceived and executed nearly 30 major research projects with funding to the tune of Rs. 6 crore, bringing out newer information on the earth system dynamics and the related developmental planning not only for Tamil Nadu but also for other parts of India, said SM. Ramasamy, Head and Director, Centre for Advanced Studies in Remote Sensing.
The centre has also played a pivotal role in introducing Remote Sensing and GIS in college and university systems by conducting over 55 short-term courses/ conferences/ seminars/ brain storming sessions benefiting over 300-400 academicians around the country. It has now conceived many research programmes of national relevance, said Dr. Ramasamy. They encompass visualisation of oil prospects as deep as 4 to 5 km; visualisation of ongoing geological processes of the Indian sub-continent for building up comprehensive models on the natural resources, ecosystems and their modifications; life histories of Tamil Nadu rivers; coastal system management models; comprehensive computerised information systems for various developmental planning; and natural disaster information system models for India.
