Showtime folks: Students enjoying a cultural event during Saarang 2006.
Saarang, the cultural festival of IIT-Madras is all set to capture the imagination of college-goers across the country from January 23. Regarded as the biggest fest in South India in terms of participation and number of events, Saarang’s reach across India has expanded more than ever before. Confirmed registrations have been received from colleges as far away as Delhi, Bhopal, Kolkata and Pune, taking the total number of colleges from outside Chennai to nearly 300. A
dd to this the various colleges in and around Chennai, and one can get an idea about the scale of the fest.
Saarang has been the proving ground for every college student to showcase their talent across a wide array of events. In addition to these events that are always present, Saarang this year aims to showcase an event that is both entertaining and informative. The India Development Debate, a debate which brings together 6 top teams from across the country will take up subjects on the current state of India and the contribution of the youth towards its development. The teams, drawn from the top universities in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad, will have 3 topics to debate on, with two teams taking on each other per topic. It will be held immediately after the inauguration of Saarang, on 23rd January and will set new standards for debating and socially-relevant discussion for cultural festivals across the country.
The innovations don’t end there. Running on all 4 days of Saarang, will be a separate enclosure called the Saarang Village. A completely rural ambience and setting has been recreated for this section of the festival area by Iventure Consultancy. The Village will feature handicrafts and arts from various parts of India, apart from specialised cuisines of the various regions. The evenings will also have folk performances by artists drawn from professional troupes around the country. The Village will act as a welcome relief from the humdrum that has come to characterize urban living today.
This is only a slight flavour of what Saarang 2008 has to offer. Throw in the professional shows, a whole bunch of new events to look forward to, and a host of interactive workshops and lectures, and it becomes clear why Saarang occupies a special place in every college student’s calendar.
