Acquiring skills for employability

“India is a country that is rich in languages and it has remained a multi-lingual society for many thousands of years. With this background, learning a foreign language has acquired greater significance in the recent years in India,” observed Rudiger Punzet, project officer, Goethe Institute, Chennai.

He was delivering the inaugural address at the one-day national seminar, “Job skills for employability” organised at the Anna Adarsh College for Women, recently.

Multilingualism

Speaking on learning foreign language for job prospects, Mr. Punzet said foreign language learners fall into two major category — integrative orientation (interest in a country, its language and culture) and instrumental orientation (career prospects). He said multi-lingualism is gaining momentum in European Union countries in the recent times. Talking about learning foreign language for better career prospects, Mr Punzet said “it is a core competence, not just a value-add.”

Approach to English

Professor Rajiva Varma, department of English, University of Delhi, who delivered the key note address, said learning English language and literature is valuable and worthwhile both for their professional and practical life. English teaching in colleges should include a cohesive body of work that includes British and American literature.

He stressed the need for translations of literary work from other languages, instead of reading translations as part of English learning. Prof. Varma pointed out that by actively being involved in theatre, they can see a sea change in their confidence and their diction. The seminar also had presentation on topics such as translation, online teaching, online journalism and medical transcription by the experts from the respective field. Earlier the principal of the college Dr. Jayashree Ghosh welcomed the gathering.
