UNIVERSITY ROUNDUP
10 lakh grant for school, colleges adoption scheme
The ambitious plan of Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, Tirupati, to adopt a fixed number of schools and colleges in the country to spread Sanskrit studies made headway with the union Ministry of Human Resource Development sanctioning a sum of Rs.10 lakh of the allocated Rs.45 lakh.
The scheme was formally launched at the varsity by the Vice-Chancellor Hare Krishna Satapathy on Feb 1, 2008 (Friday). The varsity had contemplated adoption of schools and colleges offering Sanskrit studies and will conduct lectures, essay writing contests, debate, ‘Antakshari’ competitions, training sessions and other forms of academic programmes to kindle interest in Sanskrit study.
In the first phase, the university identified 12 schools and colleges located in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karnataka, Kerala and Orissa. Plans are also afoot to extend the same to Maharashtra, Goa, Chandigarh and other north Indian states in the near future. 12 instructors have also been appointed for each institution.
SVIMS
Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) University has added another jewel in its crown with the Medical Council of India (MCI) recognising its M.Ch (Urology and Genito-Urinary Surgery) course.
Following a visit to the campus, the MCI delegation at its general council meet considered the Compliance Verification Report submitted in February 2007, together with the council inspection report of March 2006 and agreed to recognize the said courses. The rigorous standard of examinations and teaching facilities available at the varsity reportedly added weight to its consideration.
