For candidates across the country who are considering registering for part time Ph.D. programme, the Bharathiar University at Coimbatore has come out with a student and candidate-friendly decision by making an important relaxation.
The Vice-Chancellor, G.Thiruvasagam, who was in Madurai recently, says that the latest decision on the part time Ph.D would help candidates and at the same time would not compromise on the quality of the degree.
Now, as per the new guidelines, those part time/private candidates who register with Bharathiar University for a Ph.D programme, will be allowed to have a guide from any other recognised university of their choice or of a recognised local university convenient for the candidate.
“This is an important attempt made by us with regard to Ph.D. Because, in some courses there is a difficulty to find out a research guide and once the restriction is relaxed it helps the candidates,” Dr.Thiruvasagam says.
Stating that so far the university was not allowing the research scholars to get a guide/supervisor beyond the jurisdiction of the varsity, the Vice-Chancellor pointed out that the important condition, however, would be that the professor who was chosen to be a research guide should be from a recognised university. And, the candidate must get an acceptance letter from the professor whom he wants to be his/her research guide and submit it to the university.
The candidates can register for Ph.D with Bharathiar University and have a guide anywhere they want “and by this way, the problem of not finding sufficient qualified guides with in a particular university’s jurisdiction would not arise.”
While relaxing the norms, the Bharathiar University has also devised some checks to make sure that the quality of the degree was not diluted.
Those who are interested can download the application from the university website and first register online, Dr. Thiruvasagam said.
New rules
Besides, as per new rules, the university has also said that the research candidate must appear in person before the varsity’s Doctoral Committee once in a year.
“I am also planning to organise the doctoral committee meetings at important centres in the country for the convenience of Ph.D candidates,” he said.
