‘Annai Vizha’ celebrated



IN COMMEMORATION: Participants at a discourse organised to commemorate Sri Sarada Devi Day at the Avinashilingam University for Women.

The School of Mechanical Sciences of Karunya University organised an international conference on Design and Manufacturing at the college premises recently. M. Rahman, National University of Singapore, was the chief guest. He spoke on tool-based integrated micro machining, covering the range from micro to nano levels. He exhorted the students to work on this area which has potential applications in aerospace, medical and other high-tech industries.

“Annai Vizha” was celebrated at the Avinashilingam University for Women recently to commemorate Sri Sarada Devi Day. Special bhajans, discourses and music formed part of the day-long event. T.K. Shanmuganandham, Chancellor of the university, presided over the function.

The Biochemistry Association of Shri Nehru Maha Vidyalaya College of Arts and Science conducted a seminar on “Energy Generation in Cell”. A. Manickam, Professor and Head, Department of Biochemistry, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, spoke on energy production in all forms which played a key role in the metabolism of the human body.

The Department of Management Studies of Sree Saraswathi Thyagaraja College, Pollachi, organised a training programme for their MBA students on Six Sigma. The department also organised a visit to Chennai for a three-day intensive soft skill workshop for its students. There were also visits to manufacturing industries. The students were given practical sessions on spoken English, team work, positive attitude and aptitude towards challenges.

Jansons School of Business organised a one-day programme with a visiting team from the U.S. headed by Vipin Gupta, Roslyn Solomon Jaffe Chair, Professor in Strategy and Director, International Outreach, Simmons College School of Management, Boston, the U.S. A research finding on “Gender in Family Business” was presented. An interaction with 14 family business entrepreneurs was also organised. A visit to SCM Textiles Spinners, a unit of The Chennai Silks, was arranged for team and students.

The School of Information Technology and Science of the G.R. Damodaran College of Science organised a two-day seminar on “Data Security and Management” recently. Vice-President of Cognizant Technology Solutions, Coimbatore, spoke on the evolution of the IT industry and its contribution to the country’s economy. Students presented papers on various topics.

The ICFAI National College conducted “Confluence 2008” recently. The management fest was held at 170 INC centres all over India. The regional finals at Coimbatore was presided over by Anne Mary Fernandez, Registrar, Karunya University. She underlined the importance of possessing the four Ls – Life, Love, Learn and Legacy. The regional finals were held at 19 centres in India.

The Department of Information Technology of Karpagam College of Engineering organised a conference on “Innovations in Information Technology” recently. Arvind Venkatachalam, Chairman, Info Power, Coimbatore, appreciated the students’ papers on image processing, data mining and network security, and exhorted them to implement the projects into products. Nearly 130 student participants and 20 faculty members attended the conference.

The Department of Biotechnology of the Nehru Arts and Science College organised a seminar on “Current Trends in Advanced Biological Research” recently. Surya Prakash, Director, Institute of Forest Genetic and Tree Breeding, spoke on the importance of reducing global warming and saving the Earth. He said that natural calamities like Tsunami, floods, melting of the polar were warnings for the human race to conserve Nature.

The NSS Unit of RVS College of Arts and Science organised a 10-day special camp at Samalapuram Town Panchayat recently. Nearly 300 volunteers undertook work by conducting medical camps, organising seminars and rallies.
