Full of details: Sethu Institute of Technology Director, S. M. Nilofer Fatima, releases the symposium souvenir and it is received by senior scientist from ISRO, S. R. Nagaraj.

An intercollegiate literary feast, ORACLE 2008, was organised by the Department of English of Fatima College.

D.E. Benet of Department of English, National College, Tiruchi, who was the chief guest, gave an overall view of ‘children’s literature.’ Pointing out that the children’s literature had remained a neglected field of study for long, Mr. Benet spoke on the beginnings of children’s English literature in England from Aesop’s Fables to the fiction of J.K. Rowling.

Students from various colleges participated in the event and competitions such as quiz, verse writing, paper presentation and skit were held. Lady Doak College won the overall shield and American College came second.

SACS M.A.V.M.M. Engineering College organised a State-level symposium, SACS Tech 2008, which was inaugurated by M. S. Shanmugam Professor of Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. He spoke about the various technical avenues available for students.

In the valedictory function, S. Annamalai Pillai, Scientist, ISRO, Thiruvananthapuram, highlighted the various stages of development in the country’s space programmes and emphasised that these developments were only meant for peaceful purposes.

More than 100 students from various engineering colleges all over the State presented papers on modern trends in the engineering disciplines of automobile, computer science, electrical and electronics and mechanical engineering.

R.L. Institute of Management Studies arranged for a live telecast of the Union Budget. At the end of the budget presentation, students analysed its salient features and its impact on the economy. Some of the issues discussed by the students were loan waiver for farmers and how would it benefit them.

A two-day national-level symposium was organised by Electronics and Communication Engineering Department of Sethu Institute of Technology.

A senior scientist from ISRO, S. R. Nagaraj, in his presidential address, said that at ISRO engineers and scientists were continuously engaged in research and development in an effort at putting India ahead of all other nations. Every engineer strived hard to acquire more and more knowledge and adopted state-of-the-art technologies to meet the increasing challenges and requirements of ISRO programmes. He wanted every student to be committed and dedicated in whichever field he worked.

More than 100 students from various parts of the State presented papers on recent advanced technologies.

The Women’s Forum and Study Cell of Arul Anandar College organised an intercollegiate drawing competition recently. Nearly 100 girl students from in and around Madurai participated in the competition.

The college also held its 29th convocation for which the chief guest was Cynthia Pandian, Vice-Chancellor, Manonmaniam Sundarnar University, Tirunelveli.

A guest lecture on ‘Uses of software in wage and salary administration’ was held at Madurai Institute of Social Sciences for the benefit of Human Resource Management students.

The speaker, K. Kumar of Anadocs IT solutions, emphasised the need for HR executives to understand the use of software in wage and salary administration. He also demonstrated how salaries were fixed for new recruits. About 50 students participated in the seminar.

A one-day awareness programme on intellectual property rights (IPR) related issues, funded by Ministry of Human Resource Development, for Tamil Nadu Agricultural University scientists was conducted at Agricultural College and Research Institute.

K. Ramamoorthy, Dean, in his inaugural speech, emphasised the need for creating awareness of IPR issues, history of patenting and geographical indications. He appealed to the TNAU scientists to apply for protection of their own innovations.

A presentation on gene patenting and geographical indications, WTO and its implications on agriculture, Sui Generis Systems for protection of plant varieties and farmers’ rights and intellectual property law was made by C. R. Anandhakumar, Professor and Head, Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics.

A one-day national seminar on ‘Modern construction practices in steel and concrete’ was organised by the Department of Civil Engineering and Technology of Velammal Engineering College, Viraganoor.

S. Kalirajan, Additional Chief Engineer of Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project, who inaugurated the seminar, emphasized the importance of core engineers in nation building.

He said that there was a wide gap between demand and supply of trained manpower in civil engineering.

The other lectures on modern construction methods and earthquake-safe building were delivered by professors of Pondicherry Engineering College and Coimbatore institute of Technology. Delegates from various engineering colleges, Public Works Department, Highways and industries attended the seminar.
