RIGHT TURN

Enhance your power of concentration

Take on students' test of nerves

FOCUSSED: A clear and a quiet mind helps concentrate on important tasks.

Many people allow their minds to be filled with mental chatter, whereas peak performers realise the power of a quiet and a clear mind to concentrate on important tasks. Mind wavers. But when you do not yield, it turns out to be the most powerful instrument to work with. Here are a few simple exercises to enhance your power of focus.

When you are studying a difficult or boring subject, mind prompts you to pick up a magazine, watch TV for a few moments or to talk to a friend. Curb the impulse. Walk for sometime, inhale air for three steps, hold your breath for next two and then exhale for three steps. After ten minutes, you feel very alert, quiet and refreshed internally to study again. With this practice, you realise that you will be able to sit for longer hours in a precisely concentrated state.

Writing exams

Avoid talking for an hour before exams. Have a glass of water before writing exam. As you enter the hall, don’t let your mind float like a piece of paper in the wind.

To avoid unnecessary thoughts and tension, keep focused on less disturbing tasks such as counting the steps. Focus on breathing. Observe other students who are more nervous, unwind yourself, grin and feel relaxed.

As you receive the question paper, calm down, close your eyes for 30 seconds, tighten your fist, have a pleasant smile and start answering. Serotonin, the brain hormone that is released when you smile, works against your anxiety.

Some players chew bubble-gum on the field to release their tension and exhaustion. Cardamom (elaichi) has also the same effect. Chew it while writing the exam if you prefer to relax by that way.

Stay composed

Stay composed and confident before answering. Spend the first two minutes previewing the question paper, then select a question, have the entire picture of the answer and start answering. Assign time in proportion to the marks allotted.

Don’t write beyond requirement just because you know the answer in detail.

Focus on how to start, elaborate, reach to a climax and end it.

Your answer should cover all the points. Write to communicate and not to electrify. Know exactly when to use a simple or a compound sentence. Divide paragraphs correctly.

Don’t discuss

Write your exam with a pen that you are used to write.

After the exam, don’t discuss with friends about the answers, as you can do nothing about it, except getting your mood spoiled for the next exam.

Moreover, friends pointing out your mistake may be wrong.
